Wow, I think this is great! I hope all schools come up with giving sign

language as an option to fulfill that foreign language requirement! Marie

,

CSUN comes to mind because many of the Deaf Studies majors who are optioning

for teachng I know are from Texas...go figure. From what they have told me,

San has a big Deaf population so you may try there as well. Since my

geography of Texas is very limited, don't know whether San is

anywhere near West Texas.

Good Luck.

na, or anyone else in the West Texas area,

The s Board of Education recently voted to

create a new position at the high school, for ASL

teacher. This is not an interpreter position, but

rather to be a class on ASL which students can take to

fulfill their foreign language requirement (get out of

taking Spanish!).

It is half-time, with a salary of around 18,000, I

think. They are concerned with finding someone

qualified to teach the class. Would you know anyone

who has gone through a sign language training course

who might be interested? Or would you have any ideas

of where one could be found? I thought of the college

in Big Spring, and also of the El Paso Community

College, which also has sign language training.

Any ideas would be appreciated! They probably would

like to hire someone within the next 3-4 weeks, if not

sooner.

Hey, ,

Are they considering any Deaf people? The best way to learn to sign, that

I've found, is to learn it from someone who uses it all the time.

I have an old Gallaudet friend who lives in Big Spring. Or at least she did

a couple of years ago. I haven't spoken with her in quite a while. But I

know there must be other Deaf people there. She wouldn't move to a place

where she has no chance of fitting in.

Is there a school for Deaf children nearby in Texas? Most often, they can

help you out.

I'm sure they would consider someone deaf. After all,

they hired ME to teach math! And I'm deaf as the

proverbial post.

Hey, Big Spring is only 63 miles from s,

straight down a Texas highway, so it's about an hour's

drive. In fact, we play them in football and

basketball. Someone from there could commute to

s, I am sure. (if they did not wish to actually

live in s). Maybe your friend knows someone

interested??

Big Spring does have a deaf school (college). Other

than that, not much else around these parts.

If you still know how to get in touch with her, maybe

you could forward this. I sure do appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi ,

I'm sorry, but I checked around and it seems that my friend no longer lives

in Texas. I don't know of any other " teacher " friends there or elsewhere :o(

All of my friends seem happy with their current jobs.
