Guest guest
I'm just going to go right down your list and let you figure out the final info. Prednisolone---no interaction with other meds you're on. Should take before 9AM to minimize adrenal suppression. Decreases the effectiveness of salicylic acid. Arava--make sure you are getting frequent liver function labs drawn and don't take with charcoal or cholestymine. Decreases the effectiveness of salicylic acid. Folic Acid--also metabolized through the liver so liver function tests a good idea when on this. Thyroxine-Ditto on metabolized through liver. should take in AM before breakfast. Also decreased effectiveness when taken with cholestymine Fish Oil Tablets--no known hazardous effects or interactions. Celery complex--The celery seed oil shouldn't be used if you have any kidney disease, several of the ingredients interact with aspirin and NSAIDS so be careful of increased side effects from them, the white willow is high in salicylic acid and should be used with caution with NSAIDS. The Devil's claw stimulates your appetite and gastric juice secretion so if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer you shouldn't use this. So in general there are no health hazards unless you have any of the noted problems, but take at least one hour apart from your Active Calcium Plus, multiminerals and Proflavanol. Evening Primrose oil--If you have either a seizure disorder or are on meds for schizophrenia you shouldn't take it and you should also not take more than 3000 mg/day. Otherwise safe and no interactions with your other meds. Magnesium Phosphate Tissue Salt in Lactose base--unless you are lactose intolerant there are no problems with this and no interactions. Active Calcium Plus--You should take this at least one hour apart from the celery complex and not with rhubarb, spinach, bran or milk due to the oxylic acid in those things. Also decreases the effectiveness of salicylic acid. Antioxidants--the only thing, but this is major is do not take betacarotene if you smoke. It really is best to get your betacarotene from the diet. Supplementation increases several types of cancer risks--and if you smoke and take betacaroten it REALLY increases your risk of lung cancer. Multiminerals--no problems that I could find and no interactions, but because of the calcium citrate take at least one hour apart from the celery complex. Proflavanol--take at least one hour apart from the celery complex, otherwise no problems Selenium--just be very careful to keep your dose between 55-70 mcg per day or it has a bunch of side effects, including GI upset which you don't need. That's all I could find. Hope it helps. Kathy
Guest guest
Thank you so much Kathy. I have copied this and printed it out so I can study it more carefully. I'll then follow your advice. What is Adrenal suppression? I find prednisone hypes me up. I take it in the morning so it doesn't disturb my sleep later at night. What is salicytic acid? What is colestymine? I really appreciate all the work you put into this response. Thanks a bunch. (((Hugs))) Robyn Yahoo! Mobile - Check compose your email via SMS on your Telstra or Vodafone mobile. Guest guest
You're welcome. Adrenal suppression is decreased function of the adrenal glands which interferes with the hormones produced there. I'm having bad brain fog today so I can't remember which hormones those are. Let me look it up. OK--the hormones produced are epinephrine and norepinephrine, and mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. The adrenal gland helps our bodies deal with all kinds of stress--physical and mental. Since the prednisone is a steroid it tends to suppress the adrenal's natural production of steroids and taking it early in the day helps to decrease the suppression. Part of that is why you find if you take it later in the day it disturbs your sleep more. Salicylic acid is the main ingredient of aspirin. Cholestyramine is a drug used mostly to reduce cholesterol, although there are other uses. Various brand names (at least here in the States): Lo CHolest, Novo-Cholamine, Revalite, Questran. It comes as a powder you mix with liquid and drink. Kathy Re: Robyn--meds and supplements Thank you so much Kathy. I have copied this and printed it out so I can study it more carefully. Guest guest
You're more than welcome! Kind of makes me feel like I'm still a nurse when I can do something like that. I mean I know technically I'm still a nurse, but I'm not working and I miss it. Kathy Re: Robyn--meds and supplements Good Morning Kathy, Thanks again for all your advice. Guest guest
Me too. I feel it's a calling. I just get down about not being able to work right now. Right now I'm nursing Denny. His meds are kicking his butt, and something's going on with his ankle--don't know what. So we're doing elevation and ice and aspirin and it's helping. But I gave him a bell , LOL--big mistake. He worked today, but he needed aspirin and I iced it as soon as he got home. Kathy Re: Robyn--meds and supplements Good Morning Kathy, Thanks again for all your advice.
