Guest guest
It was so great to find your group. I'm 33 years old and have been struggling with weight issues since my first diet at age 7. I'm about 100 pounds overweight and have reached the end of my dieting rope. I have read the Intuitive Eating book and Thin Within. I've tried to intuitively eat on and off again with little success for about six months (mostly off). I have been to counseling and have had the benefit of becoming much more aware of my feelings and am starting to process and handle them better - but I just have a hard time not living my life on a schedule (I'm a project manager) and not pleasing people (being available to eat when they are..). I also have found that when I start to allow myself things, I start ot get out of control so I go back to the deprive/binge cycle. I know this is the right way - I feel clear God is highlighting this in bold letters to me - I just need some support to walk through this! So, that's me. One question I have is this - when I first wake-up, I usually have a stomach grumbling, hunger feeling but it goes away by the time I get ready to eat. Should I wait until I feel it again or go ahead and eat? Also, I have a group of co-workers who eat together everyday - we're project managers, we go at the same time everyday. I want to be part of the group but sometimes I'm not hungry..does anyone else have a way to deal with this? Dinner isn't a problem because I am single and am fairly flexible but I can easily succumb to boredom eating at that time. Finally, how do you handle going to a coffee shop - do you still have a cup of coffee (latte or chai) or do you only do that when hungry? Ok, there are some of my first questions. I'm so glad to be a part of this group! Bethany
Guest guest
Welcome, Bethany! It's wonderful that you've chosen to break out of idet jail and honor your true hunger. It's great that you go out to meals with your coworkers - I love sharing a nice meal with my friends. To answer your first question, your stomach does not have to be growling in order for you to be hungry enough to eat. You will feel when you are hungry, and the feeling varies from person to person, whether it's lightheadedness, tummy grumbles, headaches, grouchiness, etc. It's very individual. You will learn your own cues as you grow more in tune with your body's requests for fuel. About the coffee shop, I would say have what you feel like having. Don't deprive yourself of a latte if you aren't hungry and it looks good. If you are too strict with the bounds of hunger and full you might binge. Instead, maybe order it and sip on it enough to be satisfied and heat the rest of it up later. Or if nothing appeals to your hunger order some tea or coffee. One of the wonderful things about intuitive eating is that it involves eating when YOU are ready. You can join your friends for a fun time and order a muffin that looks yummy and have it later when you are hungry. Or you can go and just enjoy the company without having anything, if nothing appeals to you...you are in charge of making decisions. There's no rule for what to do at the coffee house, you can take care of your body and you decide what to eat. Hope that helps and I'm so glad you're here! God bless you on your journey.
