Guest guest
“ORAL HEALTHCARE Providers and HIV/AIDS” workshop” 4th, 5th – GOA, 8th Hyderabad, 11th, 12th – CHENNAI, MARCH, 2006 Despite so much of quality work happening across the world…The UN deadline -- set in 2001 -- of halting the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 will not be met on current rates of progress, with serious consequences for those countries worst affected by the disease. The HIV/AIDS pandemic continues to expand: during 2004, almost 5 million new infections occurred: 63.0% in sub-Saharan Africa, 18.0% in South and South-east Asia, 5.9% in East Asia and 4.8% in Latin America. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the numbers living with HIV are still relatively low, but the rate of increase is extremely high, with 210,000 new infections in the past year. Over 3.0 million people died in 2004, and an estimated 39.4 million people are living with the disease (95% in poor and middle-income countries, about 65% in sub-Saharan Africa and 4% in Eastern Europe and Central Asia). · With the disease reaching such high proportions are we sure that we are not seeing HIV positive persons in our clinics? · When the person walks into our clinic, are we able to tell if the person is HIV positive or negative? · Do patients declare their HIV status when they come to our clinic? · Are we part of the team that is responsible for a comprehensive delivery aimed at the HIV positive person? · How do we address stigma and discrimination while treating a HIV positive person? · Thee list of questions seems endless…does it not!!!!
