Tingling while using the mouse

Hi all,

I just got to my mail and noticed several of you guys are having problems

with your hands tingling when using the mouse. I did this also and did

nothing but ignored it. It progressed to the point where I lost the use of

my hands completely for almost a month. The tingling turned into pain. My

Doc. suggested I get some carpal tunnel gloves (the short ones) for both

hands and whenever I'm on the computer wear them. He said this tingling was

directly related to my Chiari and not carpal tunnel. I wore the gloves for 2

weeks 24 hours a day before the pain quit. Since then I alternate days with

the gloves and at the first tingle I put them on. Just a suggestion that

worked for me.

Take care,

Lucy

PS- I got the gloves at a pharmacy that also carried medical supplies so

they could fit me properly. The over the counter, generic, gloves won't work

very well.

Hi to All,

I agree with Lucy. People with Chiari(if they are having the neurological

problems) already have impairment to the conduction of some of their nerves.

Mine first started in my left hand and arm. As it spread to my right hand and

arm I was suprised to note that although the pain and other paresthesias started

in my pinky and ring fingers before progressing to all of my hand, my right hand

was first affected in the thumb and index finger(the exact opposite). I started

having pain and paresthesias pretty badly when using the computer mouse. Afew

weeks ago, I fell asleep at my computer and woke up with a paralyzed right hand

that hung limply. It didn't go away during the day so I ended up in the ER that

evening. The ER doctor said that although I may have pinched the nerve on the

side of the chair when I fell asleep, he thought that the nerve was already

comprimised due to my neurological problems because under normal circumstances

it would have resolved pretty quickly.

Anyway, now I have to wear a brace/splint on my right hand and wrist to

prevent contractures of the muscles. The feeling and paresthesias are coming

back, yet the mouse doen't seem to bother me as much with the brace on. Part of

it may be because I don't keep my hand laying on the mouse very long as I used

to previously. So, I wonder if one of the carpal tunnel type wrist splints might

help others who don't have carpal tunnel syndrome, but have pain and

paresthesias when using a mouse for long periods of time?

I also feel it is very important to have your gloves or braces measured for a

proper fit.

I have small wrists and had to get a junior size at a medical supply company.

Unfortunately, I don't own anything else in junior size :(

They said the proper fit was important as to how well the brace helped.

My hand was drawing up and my wrist locked backward. It was also numb and

tingly.

The brace helped!

I used it constantly for about 2 months - even slept in it.

Now, I only have to use it occasionally.

To All,

I agree very strongly with Peggy. I have to wear a splint/brace on my right

hand in order to prevent contractures from some nerve damage I have to the area.

I also have extremely small wrists, and the OT herself could not get it (the

smallest she had) to fit. When I got home, I bent the metal piece to pull the

hand into the proper alignment, but the wrist part was too big and when I pulled

it tighter, it pinched off the blood supply in the thumb area. I then proceeded

to cut out a larger area around the thumb, and now can tighten it to fit almost

perfectly without cutting off any circulation!

Good Luck,

Debbie
