I always decorate every room to some extent. The decorations carry a theme and aren't so eclectic as the tables, but the theme in general remains the homey , woodsy Christmas' of the past. The tables are set with my Christmas China and goldware. The napkins are white (from my Grandma) damask because of the tablecloths all being different. Denny never put up a tree before we were dating, But he always says he loves the way the house looks and feels at Christmas.

And he helps out with the decorations, LOL, but there I'm in charge.

Yes, I love it! We used to have alot of picnics during the summer with lots of family and friends. So far this year we had ONE--which replaced our Father's and Mother's day picnics and only had our parents and both of our brothers... my son was away and I forget what Kayly was doing that day. I'm hoping to have some more, but the way Denny is on this med (which seems to be getting worse not better) I doubt it's going to happen. Except we DO plan a pig roast in Sept.

Right not Denny's ankle is giving him trouble---he woke up with it the other morning. We THINK it's gout, because of the way it's looking and because of the fact he had seafood the night before. He used to get it when he was drinking, but hasn't had it in years. I'm hoping it soon goes away--swollen, red, very painful. We're keeping it elevated and intermittent ice. He can't take the NSAIDS because his gut is already bad due to the meds, so we're alternating Tylenol with aspirin. He won't take anything stronger because of his addictions.

Wow--now THAT was a change from the happy subject of Christmas, LOL--sorry.

When we lived in Michigan, we entertained at least one weekend out of every month with dinner parties for 8-12 and then we had at least 3-4 major parties during the year with 50-75 people...things like Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, etc. Likewise, our friends also did lots of dinner parties. When we got to CA, we only had maybe a dozen sit-down dinner parties other than holidays but we did do a number of buffet dinners for 30-40 people. We just never got into the type of dinner parties we had in Michigan. We moved several times while we were there but were never more than 10 miles from where we started out but the joke at the first Super Bowl party after we moved in our new house we had built was that the "old" neighbors and friends basically stayed in the LR-DR & den and the "new" neighbors were in the kitchen and family room. It really wasn't like that totally because some of the people knew persons in both groups so they were mingling in both rooms but we got teased that there was better candy and appetizers in the LR-DR than in the FR...they might have been a different assortment but they were every bit as tasty. The reason people stayed put where they started out as much as they did was because it was the Super Bowl and we had TV's set up in 6 different locations. I really miss doing that kind of entertaining but there is no way I can do that now because of health and space. Most of our friends in Michigan were transplants from other parts of the country so we bonded a lot more on holidays with them when we were returning to families so the relationships really did become very tight. I don't think we'll ever have sets of friends that mean as much to us as those we made when we were living there.

We'll never be leaving this area, in fact we'll never be leaving this house, LOL. So we still have the friends we always did. We don't see them as often since we're ill, but we do have at least one big picnic a year--usually more but last summer and this summer, not.

Then we have Christmas dinner (family--and occasionally some friend's or acquaintances with no where to go, but usually there aren't many of those in these parts, LOL) and we have a friend's Christmas dinner for the same 5-6 couples each year --Denny makes a whole prime rib, I do the sides and desserts. .. we do that one in early Dec or in Jan, depending on everyone's schedules. We go to various parties and get-together's of friends and family, too. Right now we just don't have the energy.

That energy thing is a real bummer. We keep saying we are going to plan a dinner out with some friends here...I just need to call them and set it up. When the weekend comes and we haven't made the dates, I'm so glad because I'm so tired I don't feel like putting on that smile and graciousness for an entire evening.

Yeah--the prep for a dinner is the big thing, once the guests are here we do OK.

Last year for my birthday pig roast (I think we figured there were about ninety people) the night before was the Gratz Fair--a local fair that has fireworks on the last night and we always take the boys to that. So while we were at that Denny's Mom, Step-Dad and Brother and my Son did alot of work around here--His brother stuffed the pig and got that started (it cooks over night on a fire outside in a special pig roaster Denny had built) and he and my son washed and wrapped the potatoes. Sam and Fran cleaned the porch and did some minor yard work I hadn't gotten to during the week.

Denny's energy was pretty good then as far as not being on the meds he's on now, but this was the week before his hip replacement (which is why we had my birthday picnic in Sept--his surgery was three day before my birthday) so he was in alot of pain, unrelieved by meds, and couldn't walk too well.

The next morning we set up the tables, covered them (and I had the cutest little weights for the corners--pewter looking butterfly's, dragon flys, ladybugs, and one other I can't remember) and set up the center table with the plates, side dishes, etc. My Mom and Dad came up early and helped with that. Kayly was in charge of the cake and got a baby pic of me put on the cake which was really cool! (she told me the pic she picked was this horrible one from dance review when I was about 10, LOL--it was printed on somekind of weird textured photo paper, and the color was off and I'm always pale but I look gray in that series of pics--not to mention that I was tall and skinny--I mean really skinny, mostly bones and the costume sucked. But ANYWAY, LOL, she chose the baby pic, which was cool. For that party all I did was put the table clothes on and tell people where to put the flowers ( fall mums-plants, not cut).

My I do run on, LOL

I wish I could have been there. Jim's uncle used to do pig roasts as the main event so to speak at least one day of the family reunion (his Mom's family made their reunion into a weekend event because most of her brothers had summer homes close together so those of us who didn't have one near enough would just camp out at one of the aunts or cousins. Loved those pig roasts...and the weekends. It was non-stop food and card playing.

We were all invited to your birthday party/pig roast and we all wished we could have been there. It sounds like you entertain so effortlessly...but that's the sign of a good hostess...someone who can make it look it takes no effort to put on these huge soirees.

We both know it takes lots of planning and preparation ahead of time.

I love to entertain--it's just the prep I'm not as up to anymore.

We're planning to do another pig roast in Sept....I'll let you all know in case you can come. I have two extra rooms (one is a queen-sized pull out sofa, though) and I'm sure between my parents and Kayly (how do you like how I roped her into this, LOL?) we could find room for several more. We don't have a date yet. Anyone up to camping we do have a six man tent and lots of woods, LOL.

1. I will not stuff craft supplies in every corner of my house.2. I will not keep nine projects going at one time.3. I will not pick up more buttons, lace or fabric when I have a ton at home.4. I will not let my crafting area look like a condemned area.5. I will not relegate the kitchen table to crafts.6. I will not attend craft shows just to pick up more ideas.7. I will not stock up on more craft supplies just because they are on sale.8. I will not go off on a tangent when anyone mentions that little word "import ".9. I will not let my crafting distract me from fixing dinner.10. I will not stay up all night crafting.11. I will not save dryer lint, empty cereal boxes, detergent scoops, etc.12. I will not buy every craft magazine I see.13. I will not make promises I cannot keep. See you at the craft show. Please visit our website at:http://ACES_Autoimmune.tripod.com

That would have been nice if Sheree's wedding was still on for Sept! As it is, we're making plans to spend a few weeks in PA next summer so save me a bed then!
