Re: Depakote

My daughter got pancreatitis from Depakote. It took the hospital 2 days to diagnose it and then they continued to give her IV depakene. All this while I kept asking "Could the depakene be causing this?" Finally I got a gastroenterologist to verify the causal relationship and then asked the neurologist to stop the depakene. She did, but insisted that she did not believe the depakene caused it. By that time my daughter was in ICU. It was a nightmare.

Doctors are uninformed. I warn all parents whose children take AED's about this. Thanks for posting the warning.

Sandy, 's mom

Depakene is ever so much worse on the stomach & liver than are the tablet formate, Depakote. If your youngster was given the syrup format while on the ketogenic diet, it's obvious that you do not have cooperation from your physician concerning the diet. Depakene is loaded with sugars! It's a huge NO NO for Ketokids.

We are fortunate to work with doctors who do know. I also know and I, alone, am the case manager. I coordinate my daughter's entire program. The physicians and nurses are extremely useful, knowlegeable, and loving. If you are dealing with someone whose mere personality is detrimental to the well-being of your child, you are in the wrong place. Take your money and time elsewhere!

There are many doctors who do know! They are not all bad and I hate to think of any of the parents of gravely ill children dreading dealing with doctors. Those of you with bad experiences need to find different doctors, hospitals, nurses. I know I have set up our team through the weeding-out process. And watch for things that change.

Our main hospital no longer provides good inpatient care due to medical center policy changes, and I will never again take my daughter there as an inpatient. At least until they fix their policies. I remain on the board at that institution and am trying to change it back. All inpatient care is now provided by two different hospitals and the neuro-care is taken care of by phone for us. We need neuro, ortho, cardiac, nephrology, pm & r, and much more. No one but the MOM could keep up with this kind of care.

Hope you find some relief to the seizure problems and the related items. God Bless!

off my soap box and back to my chores....Carol
