Jess has been making and passing gravel for over 2 years now with no

pain that we can tell, thank God! I would do a kidney ultraousnd (to see

if there are any small ones) and a 24 hr urine to see how much calcium

she is peeing out. I know the 24 hr urine doesn't sound like much fun

given what you said about catching it, I know of some kids who they

catheter to get it, another not fun idea.

But I do see it as a silent important issue. But for the blood on the

stix we never would have discovered that Jess was peeing out almost 3

times the normal amount of calcium (a huge potential issue for

osteoporosis) and making small stones and gravel.

There is another possibility, a weeping tumour, which can be ruled out

with an ultrasound. I don't want to scare you but I know the trouble I

had getting the drs to believe there was blood (Jess' was intermittent

and every sample I took in, there was none) and I do know of little ones

on the diet where the issue was only discovered after they started

falling and breaking bones.

Dear , i don't know that i can throw much light on the situation other

than to tell you of our experience.

Since early days of the diet Leah has from time to time shown blood in her

urine...always without infection.

She was first seen by a nephrologist about Oct 2000 and he did some

tests....kidney ultrasound and 24 hr urine save to check calcium output.

The u/sound was normal, but it was found she was excreting large altho not

unacceptable amts of calcium. The dr. was at a loss to explain the bld

content also!!

Leah will be having a followup appt next week at which an u/sound will be

done to check for stones and a further urine save.

I have found that i really need to make sure of adequate fliud intake on a

daily basis, coz if it gets down she will invariably show bld in urine soon

after.hope this helps in some way....love Jeanette

Don't know if I can help you, but agree with your concern. I'd worry

about stones. Wondering if you are getting blood when the stones are

moving & no blood when they are still. Puzzling about no pain, but seems

like most of our kids have a high pain tolerance.

My first thought here would be stones as well. I would imagine they would cause some sort of discomfort, but perhaps a renal/bladder ultrasoun would confirm or deny this speculation?

urine blood but no infection

Hi everyone, I am puzzled, yet again.

Over the last couple of weeks Hannah has shown increasing levels of blood in her urine. I don't normally send it for pathology at the first sign, as it occurs frequently and usually resolves on its own. However, as the days turned into a week the levels were still low and I let it go longer than usual, so that at about day 10 she had a strong reaction on the multistix (the strongest colour was dark green, for approx 250 eryth. per microlitre) There was no fever, pain or irritability - the things normally associated with her having a UTI, and there was no distinctive "plastic" odour, which I now know instantly as a symptom of infection.

After 2-3 days of this high reading and no other symptoms, I collected a sample of Hannah's urine (the first time I've ever managed to catch more than about 2mls of urine in one of those silly adhesive collection bags - I was very pleased with myself). I tested it and the result was NEGATIVE!!! I began to wonder if the batch of multistix was defective, and tested my son's urine. He was delighted to have something to "fire" at as I held the strip over the loo, and with even more delight he proudly announced that he had "perfect wee"!!!!

Finally, as a last resort, I sent the sample to the GP for him to test and to send to pathology if required. The GP found there WAS quite high level of blood, and his office just called to tell me there was no infection detected by the path lab.

So.......my question is - have any of you had a urine blood result w/o infection? If so did you find a cause? I still have kidney stones in the back of my mind as a possibilty, as Hannah is also on Topamax with the diet, but wouldnt she have pain if she had stones?

Hope someone can give me some pointers.
