I have to agree with Jeannine. has to have frequent CT scans to check

on the status of his VP Shunt/hydorcepehlous and we have always had success

with the chloral hydrate. Because he is VERY autonomically unstable, it is

always of concern with regard to apneas, oxygen desaturations, and his

bradycardias, but any complications have been manageable for us. On an

occasion when we were having an ER scan done, they refused to chloral hydrate

secondary to their newly revised guidelines. I pleaded with the attending to

NOT experiment on and to use what we know works. He refused and the

versed caused him to be unable to swallow, so we had to put in an IV because

of hypoglycemia! AND it didn't sedate him! They finally came to me and said

that is " cases like this " sometimes we get unexpected reactions (DUH)!

This may be what they give the boys for the 2nd half of the SPECT test then

when they have to be sedated. I will make sure I watch to make sure they are

OK. What kind of negative reactions might a mito kid have so I know what I'm

watching for and what would they do to help them if they react? S.

PS I printed out the urine stuff for the Dr. to go over with me. Thank you

so much.
