Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I have a pblm with " volume control " . Not always, but people are somtimes telling me to speak up or talk quieter. Like I would forget the setting, like library vs. train station, and talk at inappropriate levels. I've had some embarassing moments (talking too loud at a wedding and having people shushing me) and so my new deal is to talk a little quieter EVERYWHERE and if people tell me to speak up, I do so incrementally since I think it's better to speak inappropriatly softer than louder. Hope this all makes sense. nisha >From: bbryan2@... >Reply-To: NF2_Crewegroups >To: NF2_Crewegroups >Subject: volume control of your voice when deaf? >Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 15:34:27 EDT > >Crew, > >I don't remember meeting any crew member who had difficulty with " volume >control " but I am being told that this can be a problem. > >Barbara B., facing possible / lilkely? deafness - soon? > > > ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Guest guest
my voice is toooo quiet now, and i neverknow if people understand what i say or just nod because they dont want me to repeat it. i think, this may be in part because i was at a deaf college for about 5 years, and when i sign, i don't use my voice (i cant talk nearly as fast as i can sign!!!!), so not using my voice for so long has kinda messed it up also of course having a paralyzed vocal cord makes my voice raspy (like ive been smoking for 60 years kinda voice) sooo too quiet, and raspy?? not a good combination hm?? I do know of a certain crewbie who mentioned sometimes he talks tooo loud, like when meeting us at a resturant he kinda figured he tlked too loud when everyone looked at him when hr talked to hostess (or maybe its because he's so good looking no one could take their eyes off him?) hmm/ hugs caren

Guest guest
Well, Barbara, I think we ought to meet sometime. I get people telling me to be quiet ALL the time. It seems that I yell a lot ;-() I am totally, 125%, Deaf. And sometimes get in " hot water " for the " level " of my voice. FYI, I still can and LOVE to talk. I don't really mind embarassing myself. When it happens, I'm all gushy with the " sorrys " but I turn around and do it again! It's just a habit. June

Guest guest
Oh wow, this is a huge problem for me. I've been deaf for 2.5 years and to be honest, it seems volume control has gotten worse over time. My family tends to think I just don't " like " to use my voice anymore, but the truth is I just am so insecure about volume. It's ok around the house but out in public it can be tough. I made a B-A-D blunder in CHURCH concerning volume control just a few months after I became deaf. It was the most embarrassing thing and I've been so paranoid in public every since. (No one knows this story cept my sis Misha and she got a big kick out of it.) Ok well let me go ahead and tell it, what the heck. This should actually to go our Embarrassing Deaf Moments file that we had going a while back. I was at a wedding rehearsal at our church for Bobby's brother and his wife-to-be. Kind of a big wedding party up there at the front of the empty church (including Bobby) practicing how to walk and what not. Prolly 6 girls and guys, the bride and groom-to-be, our Pastor. I'm sitting at the back of the church with a few family members and friends, mainly talking to my SIL. We were doing great and she's very patient with me, I was still new and nervous to being deaf but felt comfy (little too much) talking to her. She could hear me fine! The music was playing, the wedding party was rehearsing, SIL and I were chatting, my voice level was perfect. I was not saying the nicest of things (neither was she!) and it was rather gossipy (about the bride), well my SIL's eyes grew so big while I was rambling then she and I notice the wedding party waaaaaaaaay down at the front of church is looking at me. Turned out the music had stopped as I was deep into my rambling and it traveled throughout the entire church. ha ha I think you had to be there. Very embarrassing. Of all places! Later Bobby told me it wasn't that bad, they heard me but weren't real sure what I'd said. Around the house is usually ok, even if there are several people around talking. Going out to restaurants can be tough. Hard to find the right level. Have someone motion to you whether you're too loud or soft helps. Keep trying! It's hard to imagine how tough it can be until you are deaf. careful in church, Carla bbryan2@... wrote: > Crew, > > I don't remember meeting any crew member who had difficulty with " volume > control " but I am being told that this can be a problem. > > Barbara B., facing possible / lilkely? deafness - soon? _____________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Click here for FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html
Guest guest
Speaking of volume control and embarrassing stories I came home one time thinking I would be alone. So remembering an old song in my head, " Crazy " by Aerosmith. I began to belt out the song really loud. It wasn't long that I found out I wasn't alone when my sister and mom came out to found out what the commotion was! Guest guest
> Hi Barbara, > I have a terrible problem with volume control of my voice, I thought this was a common problem with us newly deafies. I have the ABI and I tend to think that this makes the problem worse, in that, I try to speak at a volume that I can hear. In a noisey place I tend to speak louder so that I hear myself. I am constantly being signed to lower my vioce or told " you are shouting " . Often at work when I am talking to my colleagues they start to smile, when I ask What? they say " you are shouting " . It also causes a problem with my partner Janet as she gets embarrassed in a public place when I " shout " a question and everybody for a mile around turns to see what the fuss is. If anybody has any suggestions of how to combat this I am all ears, well all eyes for lipreading. cheers Alan.Gordon.Manchester.UK

Years ago, when I was still living at home, I got out of the shower and had no... uhhhh... shorts to put on, as they were all in the dryer. I threw a towel around my waist, and headed back to the wash room screaming out the chorus to " Jailbreak " by AC/DC. My mom had forgotten to tell me she had called someone to come fix the washing machine. That guy probably has my image still burned into his memory! Another one: In about '91, I was eating at a crowded restaurant with my college roommate, and he kept telling me to speak up, because the music was loud. He was telling me that our waitress was someone he had a rather embarrassing history with. So, as she was leaving our table, and right as the music STOPPED!, I practically yelled: " SHE GAVE YOU CRABS?! " I didn't go back to that restaurant again.... __________________________________________________
