Guest guest
Jan, I'm an informed vet and honestly don't have a clue what you mean. There are also many reasons that schools would want kids to wear uniforms. One of them might be similar to the reason that the armed forces and many of our public servant groups wear uniforms. Organized team sports wear uniforms. To be honest, I'd love for public schools to go to uniforms. When visiting countries that do have school uniforms, I have to say, it's quite fun to talk to kids about their school colors and attire. The parents love it. Fewer clothes to purchase. I'm sure you fear socialism, and maybe rightly so. What I don't understand is why otherwise intelligent individuals equate appropriate healthcare for all with a form of government. Perhaps you can point me to the exact spot in the legislation where there is wording that says " Guess what folks, we're all gonna be socialists now " . I'm not one to favor fear mongering and much prefer to deal with the facts and have a debate based on those facts. Have a lovely evening. Guest guest
Truly my 2 cents on uniforms. Attended public schools throughout and 1 of my 2 kids is in public (other in private right now) and I just had a school uniform discussion with a mom friend of mine last week. I remember as a child, I wanted school uniforms in the worst way. Our family had " enough " money, but my parents didn't care to keep up with the ' latest brands (which hello, as an adult, I do now get!) so we had a very limited clothing budget to spend each year. The rest of the cash was up to us (the kids). I remember distinctly, wishing I had a uniform so my parents (would likely) purchase that for me and all my limited clothing needs could be on fun items I wanted, instead of trying to stock a full closet of clothes I liked. Wish it for my kids too. Would keep the focus on the material and less on the other things in the enviornment (what he/she is wearing, etc). And again, could wear whatever you want outside of school! As for the healthcare debate, I'll leave that part all to you Kerry Regnier, MPH, RD, LDN Batavia, IL ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Mon, April 5, 2010 7:58:34 PM Subject: Re: Why socialism won't work -Healthcare bill comments -can't resist Jan, I'm an informed vet and honestly don't have a clue what you mean. Guest guest
Using your example, I would say..... most people would want the poor kids to be able to wear denim too, so to make that happen, people would contribute to cover the poor... ie - Medicaid. Guest guest
Jan, My granddaughter raised the money for OTHER people. The lower school proposed wearing a hat for $1. This was approved and they also raised money for Haiti. Is this capitalism? socialism? or just good citizenship? The private school she and her siblings attend is based on Leadership Honor and Courage. This is integrated into all classes. Guest guest
Not sure how children who can afford private school contributing $5 for Haiti relief (which was wonderful) with the reward to wear denim for the day (also relief from wearing the uniform) relates to healthcare mandates and capitalism. I do applaud your granddaughter's ingenuity--I love it when kids take initiatives like that. However, the kids in a private school may be in a very different economic situation than much of cash-strapped America who will not have a choice whether or not to participate, as the students in your example did. Guest guest
My grandchildren are private pay at their private schools. There are many children there who receive scholarships and live in less affluent areas, so the population is not at all one sided. I believe there is a correlation between what my granddaughter did and the healthcare reform bill. She internalized the message that we have a responsibility for those less fortunate than we are. That she may have to be taxed so that others can have what she has. Granted, her project was voluntary and taxation is not, but she is learning - the school is founded on these principles LEADERSHIP HONOR AND COURAGE. ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Tue, April 6, 2010 3:39:25 PM Subject: Re: Why socialism won't work -Healthcare bill comments -can't resist Not sure how children who can afford private school contributing $5 for Haiti relief (which was wonderful) with the reward to wear denim for the day (also relief from wearing the uniform) relates to healthcare mandates and capitalism.
You'll tend to strive to become more of an individual. Your granddaughter already has the capitalism mindset right. . . work hard, pay for what you want - if you want to wear denim, you can pay extra for the right. Truly, if you look at the history of the world, socialism just doesn't work. Never has. It breeds tyranical governments and limits individuality. Guest guest
Plus not all is equal - don't you think as Dietitians you deserve a better pay then someone who didn't even graduate from High School and their biggest ambition is to say " Will you take fries with that? " . What motivation would there be to work hard if I have to give all my extra money away. I am sure we all give our money to a charity we feel is worthy of our money, not to the Bernie Madoff Relief fund. Working at WIC I see families working so hard to get ahead and need that extra help and then I see those who have their hands out for ANOTHER " handout " . If someone is in dire straits - for example, unemployed not by choice, can't pay unforeseen medical bills, or even by laziness, etc. why can't there be community service they do for their aid? My friend was laid off (now has a job) but she volunteered during her layoff. End of rant....
