Guest guest
INVITATION: Public Lecture Equity Considerations of AIDS Vaccine Research in India. By Dr. Joe You are invited to a lively discussion on the goals and objectives of Indian AIDS Vaccine research agenda. An effective AIDS Vaccine (preventive and theraputic) could provide us with an additional tool to fight the pandemic. But, have we got our AIDS Vaccine research strategy correct? What should be the criteria for selecting an AIDS vaccine trial candidate is neither a rhetorical question nor a value-neutral assumption. It is a question of life and death. But the question we tend to forget is, who's life and who's death we are talking about? Selection of an AIDS vaccine candidate should not be based on bio- medical considerations alone. Health equity considerations must also be taken into consideration in selecting an AIDS vaccine candidates and the vaccine research strategy. By presenting a comparative analysis, Dr. would argue that therapeutic AIDS vaccine research has a greater equity value over a preventive AIDS vaccine research in the Indian context. An exclusive reliance on a preventive AIDS vaccine research will have a serious opportunity cost. In the long run that would also compromise the AIDS research capacity of the country. GoI should present a white paper on AIDS Vaccine research in India and establish an independent authority to protect the best interest of the clinical trial participants.
