Guest guest
When I'm cooking for myself at home, I usually put on my plate the amount that I think I'm likely to be satisfied with. I'm not very good yet at eating slowly and stopping in the middle. I do practice this more at restaurants, where I'm aware of how big the portions are and how much heavier the food is than what I cook. Today I went to lunch with six people from my office, of varying sizes and dieting propensities. It was a very rich, heavy, cheesy dish of spinach enchiladas. I moved the rice and sour cream to the side because I don't like them, and then ate slowly. Halfway through the first enchilada, I knew that I wouldn't want to finish the plate, and stopped after finishing the first enchilada. Five of the other six people ate every drop of food on their plates (we all had nearly the same dish). One of the other six (a woman who's naturally thin and I know doesn't diet) stopped two-thirds of the way through and took her leftovers to go. I was surprised at the clean plate mentality. > So, is it okay to practive portion control with IE? Guest guest
Hi Sandi-- I think portion control is just another name for it. I agree with what you wrote about having the food on my plate. As I said yesterday, it is much easier for me to eat less (which amounts to ONLY what my body needs) when it isn't right there. This was especially so when I first started. In restaurants, I will usually ask if whoever I am with will share a dinner. When I don't have someone to share with, it gets a bit more tricky...there are just some foods that don't fare well as leftovers. I find myself choosing foods I like, but maybe wouldn't necessarily pick if I were paying attention to what I truly wanted. This is true when ordering a cheeseburger...to me, they just don't reheat well. I also don't like steak reheated, so I tend not to pick that if I don't think I can eat the whole portion. When I do go with the steak, though, I will maybe not have a roll or whatever bread is offered. When I order a cheeseburger, sometimes I take the bun off, so that I can have few french fries instead. Or, I will only eat half of the roll. These are ways I've found to honor what I want to eat at the time. Another good idea is to order an appetizer or half portion of a meal. I love restaurants that do the half portions of salads or pasta dishes--and even then, it is usually more than I need!! Cheryl
Guest guest
Hi Sandy! I think that portion control is an essential portion of intuitive eating. To me, portion control means eating the portion I'm hungry for and saving the rest. However, I do believe that portion control can cease to be part of the intuitive eating process, if it's not done mindfully and in conjunction with your body's fullness cues. For example, I know dieters who practice portion control by saying " I'm eating 1/3 of whatever I order and saving the rest. " In that situation the person is not eating with regard to their satiety cues. However, an intuitive eater may see the portion size and immediately judge it as too big and either ask for a to-go box early in the meal or later. I have never asked for a to-go box at the beginning of a meal, personally, but I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as it doesn't interfere with your intuition. Hope that made sense... ~

Guest guest
In regard to restaurants, it is super hard for me to resist those huge portions sometimes. I've been trying to make restaurant eating a little more " special " instead of a convenience. So, we go to nicer restaurants, where portions sizers are smaller, less frequently. Good for health and good for finances. > > I know it sounds silly and anti-IE, but a few posts here talking > about dividing one's food into halves or fourths got me to thinking > about portion control. > > I've read a few studies that say when people have larger portions put > in front of them, they eat more than when they are offered smaller > portions--even if they can have seconds. Guest guest
Hi everyone,Quite an interesting discussion on restaurant eating..here is my two bit....When I go to a restaurant, I do not get hang up on how much or what I should eat. I go to a restaurant saying..I am going to eat good food, enjoyable food. I order what I really want to eat. As soon as it ceases to be enjoyable, I will stop eating..and if I'm still hungry..I will order something else. And it is okay..not to finish. (This was very hard for me..as my parents really pounded into my head....clean plate!! starving people out there!! finish!! etc)I have stopped playing games with my head/stomach..i.e fill up on salad first, then vegetables etc.. This is my pre IE days talking. What I do especially if it i buffet..I start with what I really want to eat...the salads can wait. Once I do that...I get satisfied with what I really wanted to eat..and usually it is only in the first round of buffet. Sometimes I feel like a dessert but I'm too full.. I do not fret. I say to my stomach/head...I will skip the desert because I am full and if I get home and still want to have dessert..guess what? There always is the 24 hour 711 store that I can run to to get dessert. Funny thing is..I have never had to go to 711 store because by the time I get home after 1 hour..I am too full to eat anything else. I guess for me..is to give myself permission to eat anything..until it stops tasting good...which is usually when I am almost full. This mentality has worked for me especially this Xmas. At the office, there are lots of goodies, chocolates, cookies, cakes. I used the same reasoning...and guess what? I did not eat a single chocolate or cookie at work...because I knew I can always get it later. I did not have to pig out on it.. Many people were very surprise when I kept refusing offers of chocolates. I just did not want chocolate then. In fact, some secret Santa person put some chocolates on my desk .. and since I was not hungry then..I 'regifted' the chocolates. Same mentality I use with dough-nuts during office meetings..If I get hungry later, I will go out and get a dough-nut but I do not eat it because it is there.... What I do is..not to take cookies, chocolates, cakes to save for later....if Im full then..I dont take any..If I get hungry later..I will go and buy what I want.....All I can say..is I have never been happier ever since I started IE, which has been one year to date. I am not lsoing weight as fast as I seud to ith those other diets..but I really do not care about that...I am stress free from having to keep track of calories, pounds, food portions etc. I love myself more each day.......!!!
