My son (5, 40 lbs) has been quite hyper off and on for the past month.

Usually when this has happened in the past, I've been able to figure out what

the offending food/supplement is, but I'm stumped this time.

He's been getting milk thistle (20 mg 3x daily) for about two months, and

someone on another list told me her child and others she knew had experienced

hyperactivity from milk thistle. Has anyone else experiiended this? I'd

thought my son was doing well on it, but perhaps I've been giving him too

much or for too long?

I've also been trying to battle yeast lately, so that would be a logical

explanation, except that when I stop giving the anti-yeast stuff for a few

days (I've alternated between colloidal silver, GSE, ProBio Gold and gave one

dose of Nystatin but it was so horrible-tasting I couldn't get any more

down), he's still hyperactive.

Other supplements I give:

Vit C. (200 mg 4x day)

3 multivitamin Yummi Bears daily (I wonder if these are the culprit because

they contain corn which we avoid, but he's been on them for many months with

seemingly no problem, and they contain molybdenum, which I want, but each one

also contain 15 mcg chromium, which my son has reacted to previously in a

single stronger dose)

Magnesium (usually 50 mg daily)

ProCulture Gold (2 capsules)

Casein-free colostrum (1 tsp)

Calcium (500 mg)

CLO (1/2 tsp transdermally)

Flaxseed (try to get a tsp ground or 1/2 tsp liquid in daily)

Vitase Digestion Formula (digestive enzyme)

But I've been giving all these to him for months, nothing really new except

the anti-yeast stuff.

He does have phenol problems and gets daily epsom salt baths and sometimes

the transdermal cream. I know the GSE is highly phenolic, but this

hyperactivity started before I began using that...in fact, I figured since

he's already hyper, I could use the GSE now and try to combat yeast since he

couldn't get much more hyper.

Stool alternates from constipation to loose and horrible smelling. He's also

sleeping restlessly and seems to be urinating more frequently.

No I'm not chelating (yet?) because his hair test seemed to come back not

mercury toxic, though other things (dilated pupils, sensitivity to phenols,

casein and gluten, extreme sensitivity to light) suggest he is mercury toxic,

so I don't know what to do there, but that's the topic for another e-mail.

Thanks for any ideas,

Debbie

Debbie, my son had been on about as much stuff as your for a year now, age 9

and 53 lbs. In the last few weeks he had become so excitable he was out of

control, and we couldn't find it either. He had bouts of not being able to

make it to the bathroom, despite being potty trained, and was wetting 5-6

times a day sometimes with in 15 minutes of each other. I did something

crazy, I took away the vitamines for a week. I only gave him colustrum, tmg

and clo and started ojobwa tea of life. I had tried it in the past but

didn't think it was doing anything so I stopped it about a year ago. with in

one week, he is a new child. He is calm, hands are undercontrol, he is no

longer running around screaming, and best of all, no accidents. I am not

sure but I honestly think I have been over vitamining him, if there is such

a thing, and considering he was taking 27 things a day, sounds like it to

me. I will slowely add one thing at a time and see what happends, but I am

not going back to the amount he was on. I don't know maybe this is a fluke,

but the child I took to therapy today sure was a perfect child, and everyone

noticed.

Hope this helps, cabbie

Debbie,

I don't have all the answers for you but my son (5, 50 lbs) gets hyper when

he has yeast flareups, so maybe it has something to do with the yeast. A die

off reaction or something? He also becomes hyper if he eats food made with

yeast like EnerG pretzels or bread.

Also, has he been eating anything new? Cranberries & blueberries make my son

hyper (though he routinely begs for both). I have also noticed that his

phenolic reactions seem to be cumulative, meaning maybe the first time wont'

make him hyper but if I keep allowing him to eat the foods he will become

increasingly hyper over the days.

I recently started my son on Milk Thistle in preparation for chelation and I

haven't seen any added hyperactivity. One thing I noticed that has calmed

him down is magnesium throughout the day, cutting his B vitamins down (he

was on the SNT hypoallergenic) though he still takes more than his 100% in

the Kirkman everyday, and zinc at bedtime. I really am a big fan of the

zinc! When previously he was bouncing off the walls long after I put him to

bed he will now just settle down and go to sleep.

Of course as I say this he is literally running laps around the house. AARG.

hehehe Part of his problem is that he needs to go outside and PLAY!

We think my son gets hyper from chocolate, among other things. He was calm

Saturday, and had chocolate cake (GFCF) Sunday afternoon. Within minutes,

he couldn't stop making noises. The next day at school, he wouldn't stay

out of other people's faces and couldn't stop moving, which is not typical.

Unfortunately, I fed him another piece because I didn't make the connection

and he went all evening with the noises and body movements. Chocolate has

lots of copper and I believe it also is on the high phenol list.

Hi Debbie-- I think you are probably right in the combination of the

yummi bears and possibly the GSE. Even though you have cut back down

to just one yummi bear-- his body is already sensitized to them. My

son -- we've talked off board-- is a lot like yours. My son could

not take phyto-bears which are similar-- and now, even to give him

one bear has him hyper within a half hour.

My son is also sensitive to phenols, and if the GSE contains phenols,

you have probably slowly been filling up his " bucket " so to speak

(the analogy I've heard before)-- once that bucket is full, it will

spill over. And even though the GSE contains a little-- over time,

it adds up to a LOT. SO my advice would be to cut out the yummi

bears completely. And cut out the GSE, and give him a couple of

weeks off of it, and see if you see improvement. IF you do, then

reintroduce the GSE on a rotation schedule-- like maybe one every

four days, and see if he tolerates that... then up it from there.

But even if you are able to increase his GSE... give him periodic

breaks from it to allow his body to get rid of the phenol effect.

RE: the foul smelling stool-- that can be from too much fats in the

stool-- I think these kind float on the water in the toilet. If it

sinks, then it is probably " food stagnation " , meaning, it is staying

in the tract too long. And yes, yeast could also be aggravated right

now because of the yummi bear/corn issue and the phenol issue-- if

one thing isn't processing well, then another part of the body is

bound to be affected.

Debbie,

I'm going to be no help here by saying it sounds like the problem

could be yeast, die-off, phenols, or the supplements themselves.

Whenever I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my son, I would

simplify his diet to a few very " safe " foods, drop all supplements,

then either add back a food or a supplement one at a time and observe

changes. With all the supplements your child is taking, I think

cutting back temporarily is an option worth considering.

What enzymes is your son taking at what dose and for how long? That

might explain part of the mystery. It's possible you need to reduce

supplements now that the enzymes may be making them easier to absorb.

How long has he had the constipation problem?

The foul smelling stools can be either the waste backing up with the

constipation, or bacteria overgrowth which is very common with

constipation. I read the yeast really don't create a foul smell,

maybe a little " yeasty " smell but not the rancid, putrid smell that

we had here. We ended up treating the bacteria with 10 days of

colloidal silver and I am immensely pleased to say it has not

returned for months now.

The hyperness could be yeast, phenols or other things. Of the list of

supplements I noticed flax seeds. That can cause hyperness too, even

negative aggression. As you go through 's idea of eliminating

everything then adding them back, keep an eye on the flax seed. Other

than that, you may try adding in some omega-3 supplements (I realize

this is what the flax seed is supposed to be for) because that also

helps some people with hyperactivity. I like the magnesium myself and

we have had good results from that.

Unfortuately, you have already be doing a great deal, and yet there

are all these possibilities too.
