I can speak to the part of your letter that asks about the age of the child for the Tetanus booster. As far as I know, our children need a Tetanus booster before they enter 7th grade. I don't believe that it's age dependent. Good luck with the rest.

Question re: Middle School Vaccines

Hello! Please- does anyone know if there is a standard age or year for when the middle schools expect children to receive a vaccine? I've heard 11 years and I've heard 7th grade- two different years for us. Also- What can I do? Since we deal with clumbsyness and curiosity- a Tetanus shot would not be a bad idea- Can we arrange for a mercury-free vaccine just by calling our doctor (He's actually not involved with our child's Dx of Aspergers- only the school/ private psychologist and CARD has dealt with that)?...another doctor?...going to another state for it?.... Please- any information would be helpful. Thank you

The tetnus booster is not recommended to be given to anyone under the

age of 7 years, as far as the school requirement I am not sure. You

should look at this link www.vaccinesafety.edu/thi-table.htm

Currently there is one form of tetnus booster that still contains

thimerosal out on the market it is by Sanofi Pasteur and it contains

25ug/0.5ml check out the link it was updated in March of 2006.

You should be able to obtain a thimerosal free vaccine from your

regular pediatrician's office, although you must be persistant and

personally I would request for the package insert of the vial they

will be drawing the booster from and read it myself to be 100% sure.

If you cannot get a thimersol free booster from your MD contact me

offline I will put you in touch with a doctor that will agree to your

request. Beth Vataker RN

I do not know any specifics about vaccine contents but I do know, from experience, that at least, in Miami-dade Schools(both Public and Private), you cannot enter 7th grade until you have gotten the Tetanus Booster. Good Luck!

When my kids were entering 7th grade it was the HepatitisB vaccine that was required.

Thank you to all who had input. It sounds like I have a whole year to figure this one out for us. I know that the waiver is a possibility but I was curious about a safer vaccine because re: Tetanus- I could see my son trying to find out how some rusty thing he finds was made and accidentally cutting himself on it. This can happen during school hours too when I'm not there to watch- so I'm weighing my options and am relieved I have some time to do so! Thanks! Question re: Middle School Vaccines

Sorry- I'm confused again. The last response said- "When my daughter went to middle school" That is usually sixth grade - not seventh. My own doctor last year told us "Yeah- I think we usually give them around 11" which again, for us is sixth. So please let me know if I am getting these messages wrong- if he will need it before 6th grade because sixth grade is middle school please write back again to tell me! We go to a private school and I don't know anyone who is in the older grades to ask. I would also prefer to- when the time comes- present the waiver to the nurse without inviting a discussion prior. Thanks again! Fwd: Question re: Middle School Vaccines

Yes, waivers are accepted anytime. When my daughter was going into middle school they required vaccinations. I went to the Public Health Department in Ft. Lauderdale (off State Road 84 and I95) and got the waiver...it's a religious exemption...no questions asked. It took about a half hour.

The tetanus booster is required to enter 7th grade in Florida. It doesn't have anything to do with going into middle school. It involves going into 7th grade. Hope that this cleared up your confusion.

Try this link for vaccine exemptions, and guidelines.

http://www.know-vaccines.org/exemptionfaq.html they provide a lot of

information regarding vaccine exemptions for the state of Florida,

guidelines and frequently asked questions, etc...The nurse at your

school cannot ask any questions regarding a vaccination exemption,

their role is only to obtain and keep on record the vaccine

information on each child in the school for the state health

department. When you get a waiver the Board of Health also cannot

question you unduly either. Please check out this web site it

provides you with the many answers you are looking for. As always

all my best to you, Beth
