Hi all,

Though I'd just do a little update blurb. First, thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers when my brother had his heart attack. He is doing pretty good, he's back at work, but on light duty for awhile. He will be having a stent put into another artery sometime in the next few months, but really, he is very lucky, and we are very happy about that. We are trying to teach him something about cooking. I'm afraid unless we buy him a dishwasher he may never cook much. Can't stand the cleaning up! But he is trying hard to eat a better diet.

Kathy and Kayly, my daughter and son-in-law are now in your territory. They are having a little trouble getting used to the fact that so few establishments accept ATM cards, and so many allow smoking, and that soda is pop, and that they can't get espresso, cappuccino, or mocha latte's on every corner, etc., but they are happy with the new apartment, they are finding the community to be friendly, and are beginning to make friends with the other new residents and their families at St. Luke's. They are at St. Luke's in Bethlehem, but they live on the outskirts of Bethlehem very close to Hellertown-- in fact, Hellertown is where they do their grocery shopping, etc. Faylie is busy putting together applications to the local colleges so she can finish her degree, and they are going to be living very frugally for awhile so they can get a down payment together for a SUV before the school year starts (they had two cars in Southern California, but left one behind on the move) and a 2nd car becomes critical. I think Faylie is a little leery of driving in snow. She's never had to before. How much does it actually snow in that area? And how close are you to that area?

I'm doing ok. Still have some boxes to unpack, but the hardest work is done. We had the annual HUD inspection at the end of last week and am very relieved that is over. It was kind of stressful, and nerve-wracking waiting for them to show up at the door.

Monday they had an complex-wide 4th of July party-- barbecue and potluck. I haven't been to such a thing in a very long time. Fixed up a big casserole of red beans and rice (I'm NEVER confident that people will like what I cook!) and it seemed to go over pretty well. Met a lot of neighbors I hadn't met yet, including a kind of interesting single male about my brother's age. He sat next to me and we had some good conversation. I was amazingly relaxed considering how long it has been since I sat and talked to a single male of approximately my own age. He offered to come over and help me set up my stereo. I'm not sure about that, but I am curious enough to kind of want to learn more about him...

OK, that's like WAY enough for now.

LOL--well, in our immediate area soda is soda. It's pop where they are 'cause they're too close to New Jersey, LOL.

Even in the little town a few miles from us you can get espresso, cappuccino and mocha latte's at the little store on the corner (which is 7-11 like, sells gas, etc, but has a good deli too).

Around here our ATM cards have the visa logo on them and we can use them anywhere, but even the ones without the logo can be used for gas and groceries.

Glad they're settling in.

I'm about 1-1.5 hours from there I think. As for the snow--it varies---every few years we really get hit---this year was one. The last few years we'd only had about 2 feet all winter and that wasn't all at once.

PenDot is fairly good about clearing the main roads--the back ones it depends on the twp how good it is. Our twp is fairly good, the next one over sucks.

However--her main concern should be ice--which we always get. Snow isn't bad to drive on 'cause you can get traction. Ice is unpredictable. Especially what they call "black ice" around here--which is when there is a thin coat of ice on the road that you can't see. She should just pay attention to the weather reports so she knows what to expect when she's going out. Around here they're good about salting or cindering.

When you come in to visit, be sure to let us know--Kayly and I could drive up and meet you! (how's that for me volunteering Kayly to drive me, LOL?)

Sounds like you're settling in. Keep us posted on the guy--we're nosy, LOL

Kathy, do you have a talk radio show hosted by , a

consumer advocate who is heard in stations all around the country. He

says that ATM cards with Visa logos are the worst thing since sliced

bread for the consumer. If you should lose your ATM card and it has a

Visa connection to it, someone can run up charges before you even know

it's lost. If there is no Visa logo on it, it is simply used as an ATM

card and is virtually useless to anyone who finds it unless you have

done something like write the secret code on it (which I know you

would never do.) Jim and I have sent back new ATM/Visa cards on

several occasions because banks of course want that extra Visa credit

business but since Jim was pickpocketed in Europe and despite

immediate notification to our banks, it took us so long to get all the

charges removed because of those D* & ^ Visas. Here's an article from

his web site you might want to read:

http://clarkhoward.com/shownotes/2001/07/30.html

Just beware of those fake Visa cards.

Hmm--we love ours! No one can run up very many charges, LOL, 'cause they aren't really a credit card, just an ATM and will be refused if they exceed the small amount in the bank.

And we carry a regular visa, too, so I don't know what the difference would be. The only way we'd lose on is if his pocket was picked or my purse lifted and the most our liability would be is $50 so even if it takes awhile to get the charges off (which I don't think it would--we use a very small bank and deal with one person) it wouldn't be a big deal.

I had the best suggestion the other day from a clerk at ACE Hardware.....She

said don't sign your card....Instead write on where you're suppose to sign

it, " Ask for ID " .... Mine wasn't signed, as I forgot to sign it, so she

asked for my ID and told me to do this....She said she did it with all of

her's and they always ask for her ID.....

Read the article though if you get a chance. When Jim was

pick-pocketed, the banks were all good about refunding the funds

pilfered but it was months and months before it was all shut off even

though we called the banks and notified all the credit card companies

within an hour of his wallet being stolen. It was a nightmare to have

to keep reminding and reminding different banks each time another

group of charges would show up. At that time we were using 2 banks

and a credit union and had ATM/Visas from each. Also having overdraft

protection on the accounts made it easier for the idiots who stole the

cards to keep taking money.

We don't sign our cards either, so they usually ask for ID. We use our Visa

I'm home now and catching up on e-mails. I DID read that article.

We would never carry that many cards anyway--we carry our Visa and

Visa check card. Wouldn't be without it.
