Guest guest
Terry, that's a really big change.........although it may have been just what was needed. Since he was only on the higher ratio for a little while, you may not see the problems you would have with dropping so fast on a ratio he was used to. During our depakote wean, I discovered the dietician's calculations were wrong and I had to drop like this, it really did make a big change. I hope this takes care of a lot of your problems, and it may even help with BMs........I found that once I got Nate on sufficient calories (he needs a LOT and was losing weight all the time) and the lower ratio, with 2:1 calcium/magnesium, our constipation problems nearly disappeared. We only have trouble now in the heat, when he doesn't take in enough fluid. Good for you........mom in control............good feeling, isn't it? Guest guest
I've never heard of needing to wait on supplements. The calcium and magnesium are very important. I would strongly advocate not waiting because the diet is deficient in calcium, which she needs, and magnesium, which should help her constipation and other absorption issues. She also needs to be on a high quality multi-vitamin. If I'm remembering correctly, I think you were dealing with lethargy. . .she may not be getting all the nutrients she needs. Many neuros/dieticians recommend something like Centrum or Bugs Bunny Sugar-Free. . .and there are many parents who use them. My personal opinion and experience is that 1) I would never give Nutra-sweet to a child prone to seizures; and, 2) our kids deserve a much higher quality vitamin. I really think you need to address this with your dietician ASAP -- I actually started on the supplements before the diet so her body would have time to adjust to them. A month is too long to be without adequate nutrition! Do you work any lettuce into her meals? 's allowed two free lettuce leaves which she has with lunch and dinner. She was never big on "salad" before -- but now she's hungry, so she gobbles it up and asks for more. I think that the lettuce (fiber) and the Cal/Mag/Zinc would solve your problem. hasn't been constipated on this diet for even a day -- if anything the only thing we've occassionally experienced the opposite problem. Hope this helps and that you're able to get her on some good quality supplements very soon.--DeEtte *** because she is in her first month of the diet she isn't allowed her supplements...she will eventually be on the cal/mag/zinc which should help...but until then...HELP! Guest guest
The MOM does not need to be calculated. We vary the dose and it has no effect on the diet at all. Dietitian agrees too, FWIW. Guest guest
, Are you in Canada or the U.S.? My dietician's response is somewhat negative about any info. from the states.... (she is calling about the ingredients of MOM tomorrow....) I agree about the supplements especially since REbekah already has osteoporosis....I have already picked up a cal/mag/zinc supplement and the Bugs Bunny vitamin. Since we decreased her clobozam by half a tab on Tuesday I would like to get passed this first and then start the cal supplement. Rebekah's lethargy came to an end Monday night...like she switched channels!!!! It was really weird but wonderful to have her back. since we had already agreed with our neurologist to cut back the meds we went ahead the next morning anyway. So far no sign of seizure activity but it has taken two weeks before to see any withdrawl seizures. Guest guest
We are in Nova Scotia, geuss that still qualifies as Canada LOL Where exactly are you? You are right, you do have to double check that the ingredients are the same in a lot of stuff, there is sometimes a difference with the US. Our ketoteam told us the MOM by (as long as you use original flavour) is fine though. I find the no supplement thing to be really wierd, never heard of anyone doing that before. Pretty sure Hopkins don't either. Unfortunately it seems like some centres do the diet without really knowing what they are doing - what is the take on your keto team?
Guest guest
LaVerna: We give Milk of Magnesia (MOM) as directed on the bottle for constipation (as laxative). We don't " work it into the plan, we just give it separatly. We've found that 2T with a glass of water (part of his daily allotment) works overnight. (Our son is almost 12 and it took some experimentation to find whether 1, 1.5 or 2 Tablespoons worked best.) It says " do not take within 2 hours of other medicines " so we have to time it carefully. I don't know if this means vitamins as well, but I try to keep the MOM separate from everything. We usually give it at night 2 hours after he's had his AEDs. One other note, I have heard that mineraly oil binds with AEDs and makes them less effective since it makes them just pass through the system instead of being absorbed. I don't know if you are on any AEDs at this time. >I need some input as to what to do with Rebekah's constipation >issues. I did buy the original M of Mag. but how do I work it into >her meal plan??? I have been using mineral oil....adding a TBsp. to >her other oil but that doesn't seem to be helping _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
Guest guest
What's the rationale for no supplements?? I let this pass the first time, but it's bothering me. I would've started the CMZ right away, since it's keto-friendly and absolutely necessary........can you ask why they feel this way? Love, Deb The MOM can be just given, start slow (1/2 tsp.?), and it usually takes a few hours, so don't give if you're going to be doing something where cleanup could be a problem...........Nate's 8, and likes to hide, mess, and then take his pants off and spread it everywhere..........usually only when he's mad at me, but still...........! Guest guest
Laverna, Milk of Magnesium isn't counted in the diet. I would keep away from mineral oil because it will interfere with the proper functioning of the bowel. Keep increasing fluids gradually. You should be starting supplements right away. This diet is seriously deficient in nutrients! Where are you doing the diet? Bill fmoreland@... wrote: > > > Hi guys.... > I need some input as to what to do with Rebekah's constipation > issues. Guest guest
We have had a terrible problem with constipation with which seems to have resloved itself just in the last week. I have increased the magnesium so it is almost the same as the calcium in his supplements. I also give half a teaspoon of mucilax (pysillium husks) at breakfast and lunch time. If I know that a movement is close and he doesn't want to push in case it will hurt I either use a gycerol suppository or a 5ml enema which works fantastically quickly. Although it is not a good situation to use either of these 2 all the time - only when you are desperate. I have never heard of having to wait to start the supplements - what is the reason for that? Keep the fluids up. I hope some of this is helpful. Good luck. ine
Guest guest
Deb: He weighs 27 kg (very skinny for his age). 1T didn't touch it and neither did 1.5T so I give between 1.75 and 2T and it works overnight. On the bottle we have it says for Laxative 2-4T for adults and for children 1/2-2T. As Antacid 1-3tsp for adults (no children's dose given). >Wow........I know the regular dose is supposed to be 1T for adults, but one >TEASPOON is all it takes for our son! How much does he weigh?
