Guest guest
Terri I can certainly understand why you are stressed. I am sorry to hear they are doing this to Joni. Doesn't seem fair and neither does the insurance problem seem fair. I will keep you in my prayers. I am so stressed right now it's also to much to take but I know I have too right?I'm having problems with Joni, it's not her she's just the average senior who's a little mouthy but the school called me the other night telling me they want to put her in a program which I found out is for *troubled kids who have issues with either the student (deprssion, etc.) or her home environment (me)*? While we don't have the standard home life (Mom, Dad, etc.) but I feel Me and Joni are doing very well. Are they making reference to my disability? I sure hope that's not the case or the fact I'm a single Mom but isn't that the *norm* with 50% of marriages ending up in divorce these days/years? I see myself as very *normal* !!! This school district is upper-middle class. The kids not only get a car at 16 it's usually brand new (BMW, SUV's, etc.) one too!! These kids are spoiled beyond belief.Forgive me but that's bullshit why can't they let her enjoy her senior year? Why do they have to put a *label* like that on her, she's so upset by this and I'm going to have to walk in there and tell them to back off or I'm going to have to take legal action against them.Instead of running to the mailbox every day to see if she's been accepted to one of the 5 colleges she applied too she's so stressed worrying what the school is going to do and that's not fair at all! She (Joni) after missing most all her freshman year with *lyme* disease and then had to go to summer school for the last 3 summers so she can graduate this year with her class. She has worked so hard to catch-up with the credit's she needed with a pretty decent GPA 3.20 and her SAT's reflect the same too but can't figure her scores out with the way they are calculated with the new test they have now. But, I'm told it's good too enough for most colleges to accept her except maybe Yale, Harvard or MIT:)....................And, then there's an auto accident from a couple years ago just after Joni got better from the lyme disease 7/o4. It was more of a fender *tap* really but the man who's bumper I *tapped* has filed a civil suit against me...grrrr!!!My insurance company has hired a lawyer to represent in the case because of the high level/torts I have for car insurance. And, this man is full of shit with the injuries he *claims* he has. My car had no damage except for some cracked paint on my bumper but TG I filed it because the pictures prove he is a liar!!!! But, he has a lawyer too who told him my ins. co. will probably settle before it goes to court. Nice lawyer huh *sarcastic* My lawyer is coming tomorrow to depose me here at my house and my house looks like it hasn't been clean'd in like forever but while not forever it's been months anyway.I hope he makes more mistakes and they bust him for insurance fraud. But my lawyer says while we are right you never know how a jury will react to it. So, they have made an offer to him and hope he jus goes away!! It's just more crap that I. Do Not need! Guest guest
Dear Teri...thank you for sharing and venting, and knowing we are a safe and caring group to do that with...as far as your daughter goes...i would ask for whatever 'documentation' the school should have to constitute putting her in some special program. Also, they can recommend it, but i do NOT believe they can enforce it if it is against her and your wishes...I am fairly sure on this. In concerns to this--if it is in some way related to your 'disability' or home environment, or Joni's feelings about you, MS, home life, the National MS Society offers counseling sessions--i think a total of 5--not much, but something. In addition, you mention about the condition of your home--i can relate to this--with 4 kids at home, 1 off in college, me feeling pretty crappy lately, my home also is..to put it mildly--untidy...The NMSS offers 50 hours of homecare per calendar year; I am waiting for a homehealth agency that they work with to call and set this up with me. I am requesting something like 4 hours a day, 2 days a week, possibly every 2 weeks, so i can kind of stretch it out. They can come in to help with home stuff, laundry, your own personal care, etc.--it is well worth taking advantage of this very wonderful opportunity. Most insurance companies will do what they can to just get past a mishap and try their best to settle out of court--I would NOT stress about this one at all, you have enough on your plate right now--let the insurance handle it. When is the last time you had a massage, or reflexology or something that would be wonderful, luxurious and comforting for you...Today i go for acupuncture-it is a treat i give myself every 4 to 6 wks. I have been also treating myself every few months with a shiatsu massage....You need something to look forward to, give you comfort, and a sense of 'being in your body'...just my usual 2 cents...blessings on you...hope the stress can soon deflate! hugs, kate OT...I am so stress'd just need to vent/purge some..TerriTo: MSersLife > > OT...I am so stress'd just need to vent/purge some. Guest guest
{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}} Terri You do need to talk to Joni's school. This guy keeps doing these claims to people because the insurance companies keep paying him off to get him off their backs. He'll keep doing it until he's caught and charged by a jury. But you take care of you and Joni. That's the most important. x0x0x0 Shirley Terri wrote: OT...I am so stress'd just need to vent/purge some. Guest guest
Hi Terri, I'm so sorry for all the stress you're dealing with. {{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}} I'm very curious about this issue with the school. What exactly are the reasons the school sites for believing Joni would benefit from this program? If they've not yet stated those reasons, and stated them clearly, they need to (by law) and in writing. What is the nature of this program? What do they call it? Would this be like a class, or something else? Would it replace any classes she's in, or be something extra? Perhaps even after school? What is the duration of this "program"? Has the school done an evaluation of Joni (which you either requested or consented to)? Or have you had one done outside of school? If they have, what were the findings? Does Joni have a disability or diagnosis, including learning disabilities, which have been identified and diagnosed? Does she have Depression? Does she meet with her counselor at school and could this be part of that? Has she had modifications or accomodations put in place at school in the past? If you do not feel this program is warranted for Joni, she can't be made to take part in it. Hopefully, this is merely a compassionate, even misguided?, attempt to help Joni in some way and it will be easily resolved. Though it may not be specific to your needs (often used by parents seeking services/modifications/accomodations for their children at school), this site may provide information which will help. http://www.wrightslaw.com Challis Terri wrote: OT...I am so stress'd just need to vent/purge some. Guest guest
Terri, Vent away, that is what we are here for. I would call her guidance counselor and find out all the criteria for the program and why they think it is appropriate for her. I work in Special Ed and the school can’t force a program on a child. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Please keep us updated. Guest guest
This is very odd; to get ANY kid into ANY special class in California, one usually has to threaten attack, bring a lawyer, drag in the ACLU, etc. I agree with Challis, too! Love to Terry, Dawn, Challis and all others who have commented on this. The power of the pen, and/or the withholding of it is mighty! Guest guest
ROFL!! It is not just California! Been there. Done that. Didn't really like the T-shirt, but kept it as a memento anyway. LOLOL Lots of friends, in any state, have the same stupid T-shirt. LOL I agree with n... I read Terri's post thinking "wow, now there's a twist". LOLOL It happens, though the flip side happens more often. I had a niece, HS'd, who was eval'd through the local PS district. I was floored throughout the process. They were wonderful. Yes, law states after written request is sent in, the school has so-many days to respond, if they deny they must state a reason, if... yadda yadda yadda. But how many of us have ever had it go so smoothly as it "should"? LOL For my niece, it did. It went smoother than smooth. The eval was great, the recommendations, the compassion, the discussion with parents. I was floored. Did I say that? LOL I remember writing to so many friends and relaying what was happening. I think they didn't believe me. One may have asked if I'd had recent dental work and what was it the Dentist gave for pain. LOL (No, no, they all believed and marveled with me lol). Granted, beyond that process the district was not so grand (hehe... a Sped Teacher who was not a teacher... no certificate, no anything... she'd been working as a hair dresser until the year or two prior... Horrible experience!). Got a good chuckle out of your post, n. Thanks. Guest guest
Yes the school district in the instance Challis is talking about was great. Very nice, very compassionate. But they didn't protect the child from the abusive teacher who she was placed with in a special ed class. Because of that experience the child is homeschooled and she does much better. When she was in the school system she was berserk, out of control most of the time. Now, 5 years later, people wouldn't know she has Asperger's Syndrome--they would just think she is shy. :)Sharon Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.. Guest guest
Thanks Challis, Nice to hear that! I have had furniture thrown at me this week by a third grader. There are days when you wonder if it is the right job choice. But most of the time I love it. It isn’t an easy job but very rewarding. I have another third grader who I have been teaching to read for two years, and this week he read his first words. Don’t know who was happier—me or his Mom. Those are the days that keep me going. 's K teacher was so sweet. I always liked her and the aid (who actually helped throughout the school and still does -- always liked her). I had so much fun helping out in that class! Same was true of his third grade teacher. She was so full of life and looked at 's "quirks" as lovable traits. This was before his dx's, and it was all "quirks and traits" then. LOL His second grade teacher was one of those who has that certain reputation among parents and the children. Not terribly fond of her. LOL But it was 's fourth grade teacher who was absolute hell. What a miserable woman to be teaching children. Horrible, horrible, horrible. 's dx had come by then, btw, and she was a constant problem. Among other things, she always wanted to give him detention for ticcing (yes, he has Tourette Syndrome). She was fun. lol 's teachers included a first grade teacher who is my favorite of all of them. This was a pilot program for the district, for certain children. fit that class well. It was a small class, with this teacher and an aid who was in that class only. His teacher adored him and talked of and his "traits" i n he same way only his Gramma and I had for years. ) I loved her and knew she truly did love . She was a Sped Teacher, btw, who moved to this class for the trial run. This was the only year for this class and that is unfortunate as it did make a difference for many of the children who were in it. The teacher returned to Sped only. Though we've liked some teachers, and they've made a great impact, that one stands out above all the others. She's the sort who allows you to keep faith in educators even when dealing with teachers like 's fourth grade teacher. ) was in her class the same year was in the fourth grade class. It was a welcome and needed balance. I tell others about that first grade teacher all the time! I had a few on both ends of the spectrum, but my fourth grade teacher stands out for me. My Mom and I were talking about him recently. I realized my Mom didn't even know how greatly the two of them working together affected my life (in school and out). <g> I've been thinking that I wish I knew how to find him, just to let him know what a change he made for me and that he STILL has that effect on me! ) It isn't easy, but the parents and children will love you for years! ) Challis connie buran wrote: Thanks Challis, Nice to hear that! I had a niece, HS'd, who was eval'd through the local PS district. I was floored throughout the process. They were wonderful. Guest guest
Gosh, Terri, seems like you are really having to work the " system " on all score...the legal, public school, medical etc bureaucracies. I don't envy your problems but I will pray. Believe it will get better...it will. I've always been a look on the positive side of things kind of person to the point I have aggravated many people around me. But, It has always served me well. With Joni, who is really having the problem...sounds to me like a school that doesn't want to do its job. I don't really believe Joni is the only one with " issues " . I would be so hot under the collar. But, As Joni is a senior, she needs to deal with it as she is getting ready to " deal " with things when college comes forward. I have three daughters and letting go of them started with that Senior year in High School. Oh so hard. And each one was NOT EASIER. There were always new problems arising. Blessings. be at peace...and I will pray for you.
