Well Holly,

According to Webster's, it is backseat and taxicab.

Don't worry about the cranial flatulence. I think it's contagious. I've

had it all day today. :-)

Yup, I'm thinking so. I used to be one of those people who thought

dog-eat-dog was actually spelled doggiedog and I couldn't for the life of

me figure out why everyone would use such a stupid-looking word in everyday

conversation! But, then I matured and became so super intelligent and

Connery was my next door neighbor . . . oh wait, I'm dreaming again. DANGIT!!

Diane,

It's amazing what people hear. Written communication on the Internet has

turned up any number of these mis-hearings like your doggiedog. One that

comes to mind is a friend who kept putting " wallah " in her posts. I

finally figured out she meant " voila. " The written language certainly can

be different from the spoken one!

If it were the lyrics to a song you were hearing creatively, the phenomenon

would be called a " mondegreen. " For example, almost everyone is familiar

with that well-known Christian hymn, " Gladly, the Cross-Eyed Bear " or the

line in another that goes, " Leaning, leaning, say fancy cure from all

alarm, Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arm. " We all know that

God's first name is Andy, don't we? ( " Andy walks with me, Andy talks with

me, Andy tells me I am his own " from " In the Garden " )

My son was fond of The Christmas Song, but he was distressed to hear that

" they know that Santa's on his way. . .he's loaded lots of poison goodies

on his sleigh. . . . " He was a child of the 60s and considering where we

live, he was also distressed about certain activities contemporary with the

Civil Rights movement. ( " Mama, will clams hurt you? " " Well, son, they can

if they come from polluted waters or they're not cooked enough to kill any

parasites or bacteria. Why do you ask? " " What about Ku Klux Klams? " )

The nomenclature " mondegreen " was coined by Sylvia , a columnist in

the 50s, who as a child heard an old ish ballad containing the line,

" They have slain the Earl of Murray and Lady Mondegreen. " She was quite

taken with the ethos of the Lady Mondegreen dying with her lover, and was

shocked in later years to learn that in truth, the only death was that of

the Earl of Murray. (They have slain the Earl of Murray and laid him on

the green.)

OMG, Val, this is hilarious! I need to forward this onto my husband, cuz

he thinks I'm nuts.

" Oh say, can you see by the Dawnzer Lee Light? " Try as I might, I have

looked in every housewares department I could think of and absolutely

cannot find a Dawnzer Lee Light! Think they have them on E-bay?

And then there are the things they say you wish they hadn't....ROTF... I

was calmly typing my dictation one day, by the way I work at the office.

The pt was an elderly gentleman, and one of his problems was to do with his

penise. Can't remember exactly what....I was happily typing and this was

what I heard...Sorry ladies, if I offend your delicate sensibilities!! And

I quote " And for his pecker problem " I just about fell out of my chair

laughing....I did not think Dr's were allowed to use those words....Guess I

was just plain wrong...

You never heard of wallah!. I use it all the time. Did not know it

began with a V....oh well, learn something new everyday.

I love your sense of humor. You ought to write a book. And this email is

Oh, I want to apply for that job!!! All I ask is enough to pay my

Heck, I'll even post a message on the hour.
