I don't usually post, but I need serious help. I feel as if I am out

of control!! I constantly eat, whether I am hungry or not. I have so

much weight to lose and I feel as if I am losing the war. I don't

even know how to get back on track!!

Hi Alison. First of all, know that you aren't alone! We're all here for you.(big hug!) Here are a couple of things that help me when I feel like you do (which is more often that I'd like!)

1. Try to remember that it isn't about control. This took me a long time to learn (I'm still trying to learn it!) The more I focus on "controlling" my eating, the more "out of control" I feel, and the more I eat. You might feel the same. It's like a rubber band - the tighter you pull it (trying to control the eating) the more resistance you get. Breaking the cycle is hard, but I think that's what IE is about, in part. So what to do instead?

2. What I try to do instead is listen to what's going on inside. What am I feeling? Am I eating because I am angry? Sad? What emotion am I feeling? Even if I eat after I check in with myself, at least I am not ignoring my emotion by using food. I find that when I get into that "death spiral" of recrimination you are describing that it is really hard to get out. Stopping and trying to focus on what I am feeling helps me break the cycle.

3. Don't beat yourself up! You aren't a bad person just because you are eating foods you'd rather not be eating right now. I try not to focus on my weight when I get like this and I try not to worry about getting back on track. It will happen if you let it. The more you beat yourself up, the harder it is to get back on track. I think someone in the group said something very profound a little while ago that really stuck with me: would you treat a small child the way you are treating yourself? Ask yourself if you would be as hard on someone else as you are on yourself. Probably not.

I hope you feel better soon. Hope this helps.

Hi Alison,

While I realise some feel that talk of excersise is diet speak, I don't believe that at all. I want to say that for me, starting a steady, committed, somewhat intensive (but it started out at only 5 minutes a day!!) excersise program is really key to balancing appetite and health. We lose muscle as we age, I don't know your age but physically we just change. And for me, excersise was the balancing act. I don't want to get into what you should do or shouldn't because then indeed, it is getting into diet talk, but mostly, just become as active as you can physically within your own limits. Also, just what Janet said, the more you try to control an urge the more you want to have what it is your controlling.

I gave up soda completely as it made me feel bloated and hungry even though I had just consumed a lot of liquid calories. I had to retrain my body to like water again, I was brought up on sugars and soda's.

But for me, the excersise is the thing that seems to balance my body.

You know, I have not dieted yet and have lost so much weight. I went to Palm Springs with my husband to a nice resort. We had dinner at the restaurant there and I ordered a lovely steak with bleu cheese dumpling and corn medley. It was luscious!! If I had a dieting mentality I would have never eaten that. But, I enjoyed every last bite with a beautiful glass of red wine . The next day I added 20 minutes to my excerise routine. It wasn't forced or " oh my I must do this'. It was a completely natural desire to balance myself (intuition) It just felt right, was not even pre planned, I just kept going that much longer, almost as if my body knew.

I have been doing this now and believe me it works. I have to say it is intuitive eating because I absolutely listen to my body as to what to do next, not any book, not any tv show . Just my body and me. Nothing else, I call that intuition :)

I don't know if this helps at all. But I hope you feel better!! There is no magic egg but your body knows what is best for it once you can become calm enough to hear it through all that dieting mentality.

It does help. I know that exercise would help me to feel better. I do need to just learn to listen to my body instead of my mind!

It does help. I do need to be kinder to myself and not listen to negative thoughts. I guess when negative thoughts come up, I just need to think of a positive thought to combat it.

Hi ,

In regard to " While I realise some feel that talk of excersise is

diet speak, I don't believe that at all. " I don't think too many

people think that talk of exercize in an of itself is diet speak.

Exercize is fun, feels good, and is good for us. However, like

anything, people can and do become obsessed with exercize for diet

reasons. It is difficult to see the difference from the outside.

There are some signs if you look carefully. You have to understand

what a person is thinking to understand the real difference though.

I am hesistant to make suggestions to other people sometimes because

it is hard to tell. If someone is in a strong diet mentality and I

tell them that I lost weight " because " I exercized, I may be

reinforcing the diet mentality. Exercize=weight loss. Exercize

more=faster weightloss. These are diet thoughts...yes, people

really do have these thoughts...I'm not making it up. *I* have had

these thoughts. Losing weight becomes so tied to exercize that one

might see weightloss as the sole motivation for exercize. When you

stop losing weight (because eventually you have to stop losing or

die), there goes the motivation.

IE encourages us to find long term motivation for exercize. You

mention how it makes you feel good...that's great long term

motivation because you want to feel good always no matter what your

weight. You mention that exercize helps you balance your appetite,

that is a good motivation because a balanced appetite is always a

good thing. Those are great IE messages!

Although I love exercize, I don't believe exercize or healthy eating

are " the answer " to finding health. To me, " the answer " starts with

healthy thoughts and stopping diet thoughts. Once you do that, the

healthy behaviors follow naturally.

Sorry for the ramble.
