Guest guest
I was doing some internet research tonight and found a doctor's posting that I hadn't seen before...he said that 1/3 of women with MA have auditory defects, and that there is also a frequent association with urinary tract anomalies. I'm curious...do any of you have these problems as well? I know you'd know it if you had an auditory problem, but what about urinary? I'm curious to know if my RE will do testing for this when I see him.
Guest guest
As far as I know, I don't have any of those problems, although I have always had to pee all the time (right after eating or drinking) and I always said that was why I stayed slim, because everything went right through me...lol! And recently, I had a bladder infection, but think it is because of the attemps of placing a catheter in " There " to do an HSG. It is interesting though isn't it, about these other abnormalities?! -Amy W. --- mom2sammyd wrote: > I was doing some internet research tonight and found > a doctor's > posting that I hadn't seen before...he said that 1/3 > of women with MA > have auditory defects, and that there is also a > frequent association > with urinary tract anomalies. Guest guest
I haven't heard of the auditory defects, but as soon as I was diagnosed with my MA, I was sent for an IVP (intravenous pyleogram) to check my kidneys. Apparently, the renal system develops around the same time so if you have a uterine anomaly, often there are anomalies of the kidneys - you might have only one, or they might be hanging out in weird places. I have both kidneys. The docs wanted to know more in case I had surgery at any time - they didn't want someone to accidentally cut into a kidney. Everyone I've seen on this journey, RE, nurses, OB, technician for u/s, peri, all asked if I'd had the IVP. Last spring we had a bit of a discussion about auditory defects, and if you run a search on the Müllerian Anomalies archives, you'll find a study abstract and some discussion about hearing problems and MAs. I think 1/3 is an exaggerated figure. And these hearing problems tend to crop up mainly in women who have assymetric problems, like UU, but I also read that even women with septate defects can have hearing loss. *I* have some hearing loss and can't hear for beans in crowded situations. My hearing problem is notable enough that kids used to tease me about being " dense. " I also have a third nipple, which is also associated with MAs. You'd be surprised at what other things are associated with MAs. will back me up on this, and probably has already responded to you. :-) One of the theories about associated defects is that when the embryo is only days old, there is a disruption in some " somites " (the segments that form vertebrae and other segmental featurs of the body), and as the embryo develops, the disruptions manifest themselves in widely divergent parts of the body, like the lower limbs and head. I don't think REs routinely do this sort of testing, since their focus is pretty narrow, but I'm sure they do know about this stuff. -- Beth SU 2 metroplasties

I'm curious to know if my RE will > do testing for this when I see him.>> , Sorry, I misunderstood this last question. Yes, an RE would be interested in knowing about kidney anomalies. When I was being evaluated for my SU, the US tech also checked to make sure that I had two kidneys rather than one, or one big horseshoe kidney. It just requires a quick look with the US on the lower back ribs. Other things that can happen are double uereters (the tube that runs from kidney to bladder), and ectopic placement of ureters or urethra. A common problem is a urethra or ureter opening into the vagina, which you probably would have figured out by now. :-) A missing kidney is sneakier. Good luck, Beth
Guest guest
We posted a while back about women with MA's and urinary/kidney problems. It sounds pretty common, but the auditory defects is new to me. I don't have that problem but I did have surgery when I was young because my urinary tract/tubes & valves were deformed. It was fixed when I was 7, but I have constant UTI's. Does anyone else have UTI's all the time. The doctor prescribed Bactrim post coital, but that doesn't work. Cipro is the only thing that works, but that is only temporary. I need to go to a Urologist before I float away from Cranberry juice & water. PS. I am supposed to have a MRI today, but I am still waiting a reply from my insurance to make sure they are going to cover it. Talk about waiting to the last minute. Idiots. If they don't reply, I will have to postpone the MRI. BU or SU, ttc ----- and that there is also a frequent association with urinary tract anomalies. I'm curious...do any of you have these problems as well? I know you'd know it if you had an auditory problem, but what about urinary? Guest guest
Oops ... Forgot to mention that I have had two mds mention the concurrance of kidney and ear structural abnormalities. The fact is, we don't know enough yet about MAs and what causes them. While the baby is developing in the uterus, kidneys, the urogenital tract and the auditory system all develop at the same time. It could be a virus mom gets, or a gene that doesn't express the right chemical during that time or different things for different babies! But that's why they are often looked at together! Guest guest
>>I need to go to a Urologist before I float away from Cranberry >>juice & water. Hey Tracey! I can't remember where you live, but would it be possible for your to see a gyno-urologist? It takes a bit of hunting to track them down, but I work in a urologist's office and one of those would be awesome to see. Alot of what urologists do is vasectomies and prostate problems, so you'd be much better off with someone who always works with your kind of plumbing :-) Good luck! Guest guest
I also only have one kidney - the left. My dr told me that they develop at the same time as the repro organs and so anomalies of both are common. No auditory problems - well, unless you talk to my DH )
