Guest guest
To All: Synthroid is not salt, if by salt one means common table sale, sodium chloride. Rather it is a salt. Salt, in the case of synthroid, is a chemical term. It refers to the fact that a compound, rather than being in the neutral, non-ionic form, is in the charged form. For example, acetic acid, which is common vinegar, is in the uncharged form. It also happens to be an acid. If you neutralize it by adding a base, such as sodium hydroxide, you get sodium acetate, which is a salt form of acetic acid. There are other salt forms of acetic acid, such as calcium acetate, magnesium acetate, etc. The salt form of a chemical has different chemical properties than the neutral form . I realize that the distinction between common table salt (which is sodium chloride, a salt form of hydrochloric acid) and a compound that is in a salt form, such as manufactured synthroid, may be hard to understand without a chemical background. but maybe it will put synthroid, as being in the salt form, into perspective. Also, as the manufacturer states, the synthroid manufactured in the lab is exactly the same as synthroid manufactured in our bodies. We should all realize that our bodies are chemical factories that use and make a vast variety of chemicals, many of which can also be made outside our bodies in a laboratory. Guest guest
Gosh I seem to have forgotten all my college chemistry. When I looked at the web reference given below it said: DESCRIPTION " Levothyroxine sodium tablets and injection contain synthetic crystalline L-3,3¢,5, 5¢-tetraiodothyronine sodium salt [levothyroxine (T4) sodium]. " " Synthetic T4 is identical to that produced in the human thyroid gland. " " Synthroid Tablets Inactive Ingredients: Acacia, confectioner's sugar (contains cornstarch), lactose, magnesium stearate, povidone, and talc, and ... a bunch of color additives ... I guess when I read sodium I thought of salt. Now for a further stupid question (I sure am curious): what exactly does synthesized mean? Thanks. wrote: > > Alyssa, > Synthroid (thyroxine) is -NOT- salt.
