Pregnancy and Celiac Disease?

I am in a real state of confusion right now and need some help from

someone out there. I found out about a year ago that I had

Celiac's. I've changed my diet and really have felt so much better

until recently. My husband and I are trying to conceive and lately

EVERY time I eat, my stomach has been a TOTAL mess. It almost feels

like the attacks I used to have when I ate gluten. It's too early to

take a pregnancy test yet, but I just don't know what to do.

Has anyone ever had these symptoms when they were pregnant? Even

when I eat very little it still bothers me. And now, dairy products

are giving me trouble. Help!

I just need some encouragement or advice. Thanks.

This must be the season! There are also current pregnancy threads on

both GlutenFreeKitchen AND CeliacSupport right now! I'm 20 weeks into

my second pregnancy so I hope I can help! I'll cut and paste my posts

from these threads at the end of my response here.

First, check your diet very carefully and go back to a turkey, rice,

fresh veggie diet for a few days if you think contamination may be

getting you since untreated Celiac is a contributing factor to

infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects... second, go get some

pregnancy tests and test,,, test again next week... etc. You may be

having morning sickness (which isn't always in the AM). Also consider

anything you've done differently while TTC. For my first pregnancy I

had reactions like you are describing but luckily I figured out that

the pharmacy had subbed a generic (which contained gluten) for my GF

prenatal vitamin script... got GNC's GF prenatals and the every

afternoon " morning sickness " stopped the next day!

Good luck Soozin!

Here is my response from the CeliacSupport yahoogroup thread:

Untreated Celiac is a contributing factor to infertility, miscarriage,

and birth defects. Be thankful that you discovered your condition

before becoming pregnant! There has been a thread of this subject at

the GlutenFreeKitchen for the past week or so and I'll cut and paste my

posts from that thread for you:

As I'm in the middle of my second very healthy pregnancy I can tell you

that as long as you're GF you have nothing special to worry about BUT

when I saw Dr. Fasano he did say that infertility is not uncommon if

either partner has untreated celiac and that birth defects were more

common when the mother is Celiac and doesn't know it or doesn't follow

a GF diet.

<<< below are responses to specific questions asked in the original

post >>>

GNC makes GF prenatals. The ones I was prescribed were also GF, but

the pharmacy gave me a generic as required by the insurance co. which

wasn't! Raspberry herbal tea is fine! Red Raspberry LEAF tea is

actually recommended for uterine toning and suggested at a rate of 2-3

cups daily throughout pregnancy unless you have a history of preterm

labor... then you should wait until the last trimester.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

GF breastmilk from a GF mama is the absolute safest way to feed your

baby though. I was lucky enough to find this article before ever

becoming a mother:

st_prod.html?p_prodid=668 & p_catid= & sid=91hH9H0l3MGJ0ET-18103592215.d9

I have heard horror stories from parents of sick babies who later

turned out to be celiac... experimenting with formula after formula and

dealing with the sick babies, projectile vomiting, etc. until they

found certain (sometimes prescription) brands which ran them 2-3 times

the cost of normal formulas!

I am thankful we found out about my celiac before we tried to have a

baby. Our son may or may not have celiac but he has suffered none of

the failure to thrive or physical discomforts that make celiac so

terrible for infants. He is almost two now and we will be putting him

through a gluten trial sometime after his birthday. We hope he is NOT

celiac, of course, but if he is we are prepared as Lucy said!
