I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a car mechanic, but I was told to compare these cardiac sounds to engine sounds in relation to valves in the case of heaves and lifts.. they are just different noises the heart makes.. like thrills or rubs. A thrill is sort of a vibration. I looked up heaves in both Dorland's and Stedman's concise, and here's what I got : A chronic pulmonary emphysema of horses; symptoms include a wheezy cough and dyspnea, especially when exercised. So, actually a heave is a heart sound the relates to cardiac AND pulmonary. The cardiac silhouette is the shape of the heart. Think of the black paper " shadow " cutouts from grade school of the Presidents ... remember those? It's the outline type shape.
