Dianna, if you are using the Stanford meal planner that I am (and I think

there's only one) you CAN use .5 or .1 grams.........the program rounds up

the figure in the box, but it does figure the difference, and if you look in

the top header, where it displays what you are currently looking at, the

correct figure is displayed there. I don't know how else to explain

it........took me forever to figure that out. Love, Deb

Hi Terry,

I get sesame oil as 884 Kcal which is 98.22 gm fat/100 gm. It is also listed

at sat. 14.2, mono 39.7, and poly 41.7(if that interests you)

I am only just getting into tuning the diet myself, having finally weaned from

tegretol. I am adjusting calories based on weight. Even though we have been at

the diet for 8 months, it can take a long time to adjust everything. Usually

it can take 2 weeks to see the result of any changes. (I know that isn't much

consolation if you have to use diastat). From what I have read, if there are

early morning seizures, they can sometimes be caused by a lack of food over

night. Giving a late night snack which is calculated in can be helpful in this

regard.

You could also consider moving calories down again by small amounts. But this

is art not science.

What do you mean by protein carbs? There are carbs and there are proteins.

I use hand calculations so I don't know what you mean by .5 and 1. in the

computer program. Because fat is 9 calories, I often have a decimal point for

the amount of oil in the meal.

Hope that helps,

Bill

Thanks Deb,

I will check that out when I do his evening meal. We ran out

of Efelax 4 days ago and now he's constipated. I should get it in

tomorrow.

Bill,

Nick has 4 meals a day and his last one is at 9pm and he goes to bed

at 10:15 or so. I don't think I could cram a snack between there.

The decimal point is for the grams not calories. The menu planner

I use I insert the grams and it figures all the calories etc. It

even has how many grams to the tenth that I need of proteins, carbs and

fats. When I talk protein carbs I am just talking about the way the

two make up my extra non fat calories. Nick's dietitian wants us

on 2g per kilo of protein which leaves us no carbs except for meds and

supplements. I switched to 1.6g per kilo, but when our ratio went

to 3.5:1 my proteins remain constant but my carbs are almost nothing again.

I would like to have him closer to the RDA on proteins, maybe 1.4 per kilo

so I could add some carbs to his diet.

I commend you for working out your calculations by hand. My husband

just commented that it would be impossible to do it that way. I told

him ' Not impossible, but very time consuming.'

Thanks for the info on sesame oil.

Hi Dianna,

You might want to reduce the size of that last meal. It is a lot more than

most kids get and the calorie needs are less at night? Just a thought.

Is there a reason for the dietician wanting high protein? Or are you just

trying to increase the ketones? I know that we are probably not getting high

enough ketones. They are hard to measure. I don't remember seeing protein up

to 2.0 for any age group. Curious.

I do the calculations by hand because I only have 2 meals that I make right

now, I am now experienced, and it keeps me away from the Internet! 8-)

You can get about 6000 food items at the US government site. Sorry, but I

forget the URL at the moment.

Bill,

I have questioned my young dietitian about the high protein and she

says she once had a 2 1/2 year old who lost her hair and her nails were

brittle. Therefore, all children she puts on the diet she wants at

1.8-2 per kilo. I am already going against her wishes doing the 1.6

per kilo. I feel that if I notice he is experiencing hair loss I

can increase his proteins. I am being patient now, except I need

to go pick up more diastat. We have been at 3.5:1 for a week now

and it has only increased seizures. Do I stay here another week to

see if they go down or do I go back to 3:1 when we had 25% improvement

in seizures and wonderful changes in demeanor and activity level.

Plus his BHB was 6.19 at that level. Any votes? It could be

that seizure control is right around the corner, I don't know. SIGH

Terry,

I am probably not the best person to be advising on this as my daughter's hair

started to fall out 2 months ago after being on the diet for six months! She

was on a supplement made up locally and I have changed to WholeLife. The Keto

Book mentions this as a side effect that is currently under study. " In some

children hair may begin to fall out or may become coarse and reddish. This may

be due to lack of minerals but has not been adequately studied. We supplement

those children with a carbohydrate-free mineral supplement. "

Maybe it has something to do with protein, maybe not.
