" UT RECEIVES $12 MILLION GRANT FOR RHEUMATOLOGY RESEARCH "

Nov. 6, 12:45 p.m. - The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

today announced receipt of two federal grants worth $12 million for research

in areas of rheumatology.

The Department of Rheumatology at the UT College of Medicine is the first in

the nation to have two simultaneous grants in the same division for

Specialized Centers of Research. The two new grants are to fund research

over five years into scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis. Scleroderma is a

progressive disease of the skin and organs involving collagen tissue. A

separate $5 million grant from the University of Tennessee will fund a new

Center of Excellence for the Diseases of Connective Tissue in Memphis.
