Let me be the first to welcome you to the deaf world! I, and many others,

have also had the same experiences as you with " nodding " .

I had one experience similar to yours where I usually eat by myself at a

local Denny's Restaurant before my classes start so I normally know their

speil. I.E., what do you want to order, drink, etc, etc...but it threw me

off one time when the server was holding a pot of coffee, so I ASSUMED they

were asking, 'would you like for me to refill your cup?', so I answered " No "

And with a suprised look I lip read " What's wrong? " Apparently I didn't

understand her the first time when she said, " is everything okay? " =P

Well I do not have any stories as good as yours. That has to be the best

one I ever heard!

However, yes I do " fake " it quite a bit. LOL I am not completely deaf but

most of the time I can't understand people unless they are sitting right

next to me and talking into my good ear (which is still not that good

because I need a hearing aid for it).

One time when I was talking to a coworker of a friend, she kept babbling on

and I felt too strange to tell her that I was mostly deaf (thus I could not

hear her). LOL So to keep from having to explain about it, I just pretended

I knew what she was saying and kept nodding my head. I don't think she was

telling me anything to important anyway (kind of a ditsy person really). So

anyhow, she finally asks me a question which I did not fully hear. So I

kind of paused for a moment trying to think of what to do. Then I said

" What? Can you speak up? I am going deaf! " To my surprise she started to

laugh in a hysterical manner and said to me " Yeah, I'm going deaf too! "

She was so ditsy that she did not " get it " and thought I was joking! So I

just laughed along with her and kept nodding my head until she left. LOL

Glad you guys are sharing your " faking it " experiences so I don't feel like

I'm the only one... I do it so often that it's second nature to me now.

That's a bad thing. Oh well.

PS: Mark: it was me, Nisha, who sent the message and not Netta. =)

I fake my way through more conversations than I care to admit, especially if

the person is just idle chatting.. a Smile and nod in the appropriate places

Hi Alan,

I've had that experience many times s from solicitors while going to class.

They would ask me if I would like to join their church or their service.

They even try to pantomime what they're saying (which is annoying). That's

the time when I usually say, " I'm late for class. "

hi all

I used to fake it with a nod and a smile, and thought I was getting good at

it. My partner Janet however knows the sign that I am faking, and she will

ask me, " WHAT DID HE or SHE JUST SAY " . It's very embarrassing to admit

that I don't really know ??.

But how many times has a stranger said something, you explain that your deaf

etc, and they just carry on regardless.

Hi Jeff,

Usually these solicitors leave me alone once I tell them I'm deaf and sign

like crazy, which usually drives them away. However, I often get those who

are beginning signers and have them fingerspell to me or try to communicate

with me with their basic signing. It's usually hilarous and quite touching

for me, at the same time, because they often take the time to get their

point across no matter what. But like I said earlier, they usually come up

to me when I'm on my way to class so I just brush them off and say, " no " .

You're right though. I've experienced what you have experienced with the " oh

you poor soul " bit. Like you, I try to be nice also, but you're right, it's

still quite a pain.

I never used to have

trouble with anyone until I started walking with a cane.

I swear its like a magnet they are just drawn to it. Not sure if they think

I am an easy mark or if they feel sorry for me (Oh I gotta go save that poor

crippled mans soul!!) I try to be nice about it cause I know people mean

well but it can still be a pain.

This brings up a good point, how many people out there have trouble like

this? Not just with people trying to get you to go to their church but also

people asking for money or trying to sell something. I never used to have

trouble with anyone until I started walking with a cane.

I'm a magnet for people wanting street directions and to know the time.

Happens every second day !

Have you ever tried to lip read a total stranger in the middle of the street

?? Sheeesh !! If I sit on my butt to have a bite to eat halfwits come from

miles around wanting to know the time,,,,,,, I'm like human fly paper..

Instead of telling them in perfect English that I'm totally deaf, I like to

make squeaky grunting noises, point to my ears and shake my head !!! haha

They leave me alone real fast !

Most people ask me directions so I just point down the street.. and say '

Yep its definitely that way you just keep walking, maybe 3 or 4 blocks '

hahahahha Its even better when their little old ladies....

Some days its nice to be a little bad ....... MArcus

Hi Crew,

I know how it can be with those soliciters ,poll takers and pests like

that..I have used a cane on and off at times and I have always been

aproached also by these people and I always wonderd why...When they see a

person that has a cane they figure AH-HA,they CANNOT get away so fast :)I

have seen many people aproached at our Mall here and when a servey taker gets

real close to them or starts talking to them they start walk real FAST...

Maybe thats the reason why..Any other ideas?Just my 2 cents :)

Hi all, personally, if I'm approached by someone selling something, or a

survey taker, or whatever, I just point to my ears and shrug. They get the

picture and leave me alone :o)

Sometimes, though, I get some VERY enthusiastic people. For example, my Dad

has a fence with a permanently locked gate around his front yard so that he

can let his dogs run loose. Well, when I was living there, some solicitors

were brazen enough to either break through the lock or to come right through

the garage. But I still " played " deaf. I turned off my voice. So all their

work was for nothing. But I had to go out and fix the gate and make sure

that all the doors were ok.

What a waste of time! So I moved. HAHA!!

HI JIMMY,

I read your story on the Jehova Witnesses, those GUYS just dont give up do

they :))))either that or there so thick headed...Everyone has there stories

about those GUYS heheh..I know one morning here at home there was a knock on

the door before 8 am and I looked out my peep whole and I was thinking it

might be the inspectors that were supposed to be there that week..They can

start as early as 7...Well anyhow I opend the door and they started

talking...so I said I am sorry but I am hearing impaired so they whip out one

of there little books and it clikcs in my head BINGO...so I slamed the door

in there face...I don't know how the hell they do it...but I live in a

security building and they worm there way in somehow...

I have a girlfriend that was a Jehova's Wintness when she was younger...She

really had no choice because her parents were involved in it..She stopped

being involved in that at about 12 years old..Anyhow we get together on the

weekends a lot and talk and I have a hard time with that religeon...I can't

understand it at all..

I also worked in a day care center when I was younger,I worked with 3 and 4

year olds and I remember working with 2 children that were 3 and 4 and were

witnesses...It broke my heart...Thats a hard religeon to understand...Just my

thoughts..

I have an uncle who is a zealot. He believes in

healing, speaking in tongues, etc. We cannot get

through a conversation without him asking if I know

Jesus as my Lord. (I am a Christian, but don't

believe in praying for God to heal my toothache, which

he has done). He told me just last week that he was

" puzzled " that Reagan (my daughter) got NF2 from me,

because he had prayed for her. He told me that he

prays for God to " heal me. " I told him he was wasting

his time.

As for the Jehovah's Witnesses- I just take their

Watchtowers and say I will read them, then close the

door.
