Guest guest
Netta! =D Let me be the first to welcome you to the deaf world! I, and many others, have also had the same experiences as you with " nodding " . I had one experience similar to yours where I usually eat by myself at a local Denny's Restaurant before my classes start so I normally know their speil. I.E., what do you want to order, drink, etc, etc...but it threw me off one time when the server was holding a pot of coffee, so I ASSUMED they were asking, 'would you like for me to refill your cup?', so I answered " No " And with a suprised look I lip read " What's wrong? " Apparently I didn't understand her the first time when she said, " is everything okay? " =P Mark@... ----Original Message Follows---- Oy..... Guest guest
Well I do not have any stories as good as yours. That has to be the best one I ever heard! However, yes I do " fake " it quite a bit. LOL I am not completely deaf but most of the time I can't understand people unless they are sitting right next to me and talking into my good ear (which is still not that good because I need a hearing aid for it). One time when I was talking to a coworker of a friend, she kept babbling on and I felt too strange to tell her that I was mostly deaf (thus I could not hear her). LOL So to keep from having to explain about it, I just pretended I knew what she was saying and kept nodding my head. I don't think she was telling me anything to important anyway (kind of a ditsy person really). So anyhow, she finally asks me a question which I did not fully hear. So I kind of paused for a moment trying to think of what to do. Then I said " What? Can you speak up? I am going deaf! " To my surprise she started to laugh in a hysterical manner and said to me " Yeah, I'm going deaf too! " She was so ditsy that she did not " get it " and thought I was joking! So I just laughed along with her and kept nodding my head until she left. LOL -Beck
Guest guest
Glad you guys are sharing your " faking it " experiences so I don't feel like I'm the only one... I do it so often that it's second nature to me now. That's a bad thing. Oh well. Guest guest
Hi Alan, I've had that experience many times s from solicitors while going to class. They would ask me if I would like to join their church or their service. They even try to pantomime what they're saying (which is annoying). That's the time when I usually say, " I'm late for class. " Mark ----Original Message Follows---- But how many times has a stranger said something, you explain that your deaf etc, and they just carry on regardless. Guest guest
hi all I used to fake it with a nod and a smile, and thought I was getting good at it. My partner Janet however knows the sign that I am faking, and she will ask me, " WHAT DID HE or SHE JUST SAY " . It's very embarrassing to admit that I don't really know ??. But how many times has a stranger said something, you explain that your deaf etc, and they just carry on regardless. Alan.Gordon.Manchester.UK (alan.gordon@...) Guest guest
Hi Jeff, Usually these solicitors leave me alone once I tell them I'm deaf and sign like crazy, which usually drives them away. However, I often get those who are beginning signers and have them fingerspell to me or try to communicate with me with their basic signing. It's usually hilarous and quite touching for me, at the same time, because they often take the time to get their point across no matter what. But like I said earlier, they usually come up to me when I'm on my way to class so I just brush them off and say, " no " . You're right though. I've experienced what you have experienced with the " oh you poor soul " bit. Like you, I try to be nice also, but you're right, it's still quite a pain. Mark ----Original Message Follows---- I never used to have trouble with anyone until I started walking with a cane. I swear its like a magnet they are just drawn to it. Not sure if they think I am an easy mark or if they feel sorry for me (Oh I gotta go save that poor crippled mans soul!!) I try to be nice about it cause I know people mean well but it can still be a pain. Guest guest
This brings up a good point, how many people out there have trouble like this? Not just with people trying to get you to go to their church but also people asking for money or trying to sell something. Guest guest
Hi all, personally, if I'm approached by someone selling something, or a survey taker, or whatever, I just point to my ears and shrug. They get the picture and leave me alone ) Sometimes, though, I get some VERY enthusiastic people. For example, my Dad has a fence with a permanently locked gate around his front yard so that he can let his dogs run loose. Well, when I was living there, some solicitors were brazen enough to either break through the lock or to come right through the garage. But I still " played " deaf. I turned off my voice. So all their work was for nothing. But I had to go out and fix the gate and make sure that all the doors were ok. What a waste of time! So I moved. HAHA!! Guest guest
I have an uncle who is a zealot. He believes in healing, speaking in tongues, etc. We cannot get through a conversation without him asking if I know Jesus as my Lord. (I am a Christian, but don't believe in praying for God to heal my toothache, which he has done). He told me just last week that he was " puzzled " that Reagan (my daughter) got NF2 from me, because he had prayed for her. He told me that he prays for God to " heal me. " I told him he was wasting his time. As for the Jehovah's Witnesses- I just take their Watchtowers and say I will read them, then close the door. --- Jeff Wurst wrote: > This brings up a good point, how many people out > there have trouble like > this?
