Someone just got in touch with me and said that I'll need a " service dog " for

my son. A therapy dog deals with strangers in hospital, schools, nursing

homes, etc. I was lucky that I found a breeder in my State that knows

everything when it comes to dogs. She even trains service dogs herself and

knows several people who do this too. She's going to give us a dog but we'll

have to get her trained on our own and I'm not sure how much this will cost.

For a dog that's already trained, I'd start doing an internet search on

service dogs. I know they have extensive questionnaires that you have to fill

out and I'm sure there's a waiting list for these dogs. I know you have to

have a fenced in yard at least and usually no other dogs in the home.

There is an organisation out there and if I remember correctly it is called

'National Service Dogs' that train dogs specifically for children with autism.

We were ging to apply but I had concerns about our sons aggression and how it

would affect the dog.

I was told the wait was about 18 months and yes there's an extensive process you

need to go through including a 1 week training session for the parent at thier

facilities. It is a Canadian organisation and again if I remember correctly

located in Guelph.

Doesn't Canine Companions for Independence train these as well?
