Guest guest
I've worked w/ individuals on Zyprexa but didn't interact with those same kids before they had Zyprexa. I know it has a side effect of causing (sometimes excessive) weight gain. Several individuals I know switched to a new med called Geodon which apparently works about the same without the weight gain. Guest guest
Angie, Zyprexa (olanzapine) can cause severe weight gain, and with that, increased risk for diabetes. There is also the risk of EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms)- movement disorders. Seroquel (quetiapine) might be a better choice- little chance of EPS or weight gain; also no prolactin elevation, which can cause breast enlargement and lactation. For more info. on these drugs, try Lilly website for Zyprexa or www.seroquel.com good luck ! JR
Guest guest
Be VERY CAREFUL with Geodon (ziprasodone), this product was delayed for approval by the FDA. The problem is prolongation of the QT interval, cardiac issues. This product was originally named Zeldox. Pfizer changed the name to bag the negative press associated with the QT issues. Guest guest
Zyprexa (olanzapine), Risperdal (risperidone), Seroquel (quetiapine), Geodon (ziprasidone) & Clozaril (clozapine) are all considered " atypical " antipsychotic medications. They are considered to be atypical Vs. typical (older antipsychotics) because they supposedly have a greater propensity to limit EPS side effects (extrapyramidal symptoms)- movement disorders, ie, tardive dyskinesia, dystonia, parkinsonism, akathisia. In autism, these meds are Rxed to control negative behaviours, agitation or agression. They are also Rxed for control of Mania (Zyprexa-FDA approved) and possibly, for sleep control.
