postural

reflexes at

key stages in development provide reliable

indicators of maturity in the functioning of the

Central Nervous System. Primitive reflexes are

tested routinely at birth and in the first few weeks

of postnatal life but are not re-assessed at a later

age as a matter of course. This paper examines the

functions and effects of three primitive reflexes,

explaining how abnormal primitive reflexes can

predispose a child to allergy, anxiety, coordination

problems and subsequent learning and behavioral

challenges including inattention.

TIP of the Week: If you want to be a better communicator, learn to listen

There is nothing so annoying as to have two people

talking when you're busy interrupting. — Mark

Twain"Educators consider listening to be the

second most difficult skill. Reading is the most

difficult" (Language Learning Laboratory, TTU 2004).

Be An Effective Listener by Dianne Schilling, http://www.womensmedia.com,

can help parents communicative more effectively when

meeting with their health care practitioners. The

"Ten Steps to Effective Listening" is discussed in

Step 9 from the book Diagnosis Autism: Now

What?Dr. Jay Burstein, a board-certified

urologist whose work is published in pediatric

medical textbooks and a parent of a child with

developmental disorders, says that when a patient

maintains good eye contact with him, he knows they

are absorbing the information he is communicating to

them. “You wouldn’t believe how many patients I

interview that don’t look at me,” says Dr. Burstein.

If they are not looking at him, he feels that his

dialogue is ineffective. “I have no idea if they are

comprehending the information and it becomes a

one-way conversation. The communication becomes a

monologue. Having a patient that listens with good

eye contact allows me to stay on task and encourages

me to embellish the discussion.” http://www.dekalbclinic.com/doctors/jburstein.html
