Here's a respost from Dr. regarding LID:

Dear ThyCa Members:

The low iodine diet is important to optimize the sensitivity of I-131

scans and the effectiveness of I-131 therapies. It is only necessary

to be on the diet for 1-2 weeks before the I-131 administration. One

week can often be sufficient, but sometimes it takes a preceding week

for patients to get used to the diet and avoid errors. This is not

based upon my opinion. It is based upon meticulous measurements of

iodine excretion after being on the diet for one week in a wide array

of patients. The only factor which renders a good low iodine diet

useless is prior administration of iodinated contrast dyes, typically

given for CT scans or angiograms. Such iodine contrast may persist

at sufficient levels for up to 10-12 months to make I-131 less

effective or ineffective.

So I've been hanging around reading postings for days then I read

this

one which scared me! My ENT never told me to have a Low Iodine Diet

before my RAI! I had it done Christmas Day of last year, is there any

danger in NOT having a LID 2 weeks before???

1st surgery;enlarge Lymph node biopsey, Thyca, 2nd surgery; Thyroid

removed, then RAI, ... now getting ready for 6 month RAI

Hi Chaz:

I went on Cytomel 4 weeks before I started my LID. The day I started

my LID, I stopped the Cytomel and started going hypo. I was going

into week 3 of the LID and being hypo by the time I did my tracer

dose of radioiodine and going into week 4 by the time I had my RAI.

You generally start the LID 2 weeks prior to the full body scan (the one

they use to determine your dosage) and then continue on for 2 days after

RAI.

Papillary Thyroid Cancer w/ Lymph Node involvement

pt 3/1/00, tt 4/12/00

RAI 100 mCi's 5/26/00

Tg 8.8 while suppressed - Tg 357 with TSH of 96 on 12/27/00

2nd RAI 150 mCi's 1/19/01

Dear :

Many endos do not mention the LID. I guess they do not feel it is necessary.

I have had positive scans without using the LID. (I didn't use it because I

didn't know about it at the time.) Most likely, the LID increases the

sensitivity of the RAI scan. However, at this point I think you should not

worry about the scan you had without the LID, but do consider it for future

scans.
