Heidi...

Are you using the mealplanner that is on Excel? If so, you can just open the page titled 'food values' on the bottom of the sheet. Scroll down to the first empty space, add in 'breastmilk', then in the next space, put the serving size (100 ml). The next three spaces are for protein, fats, and finally carbs. It'll figure it all out for you and then 'breastmilk' will be one of your available choices. Glad to hear you guys are getting to lower the ratio! Nan Oh...how'd the swallow test go????

My dietician has always calculated all my meals (we use the exchange system) but I think I am getting a little too "creative " for her and I want to see if I can add a little more excitement to Brittany's meals!!! Thanks alot- I will give a yell if I get stuck!!!

Heidi....

So sorry to hear about the swallow study...I know how excited you were about the possibilities! So you have a speech therapist working with you? Sev works with one for an hour each week, and it has really helped. She gives me oral stim ideas, tries Sev on different foods and lets me know what the next thing we can move onto is. When we began with her, Sev had a hard time with the bottle...couldn't initiate sucking appropriately, and we on stage two baby foods. Right now, he's holding his own bottle sucking away to wash down the pork roast (real pork roast...NOT baby food...a BIG DAY!) he had for lunch! So, there is hope. Love, Nan

Thanks, Nan! I'll give that a try.

We failed the swallow study - Lucas didn't want to swallow! The OT said she didn't want to continue because if he wasn't swallowing to protect his airway, the food she would give him would trickle down into his lungs. :( So, we have to work on oral stimulation, without using food or formula at all (at least by their recommendation). It really stinks, because I KNOW he can feed, at least sometimes. He used to take his bottle or nurse (pre-diet) for small periods of time, once in awhile. I guess it's just another thing we have to work on. Maybe when we get a little further with our med weans, that will help. It is very discouraging.

It's available at www.ketogenic.org Just scroll down until you see the 'mealplanner' link. It is very easy to use...can't imagine living without it! I change, adjust or just plain fiddle with Sev's meals on a daily basis...adding in whatever veggie, fruit, or meat we have. Let me know if you have any troubles and I'll see what I can do. I kno wit's available at the Stanford site as well. Nan

Hi, Heidi,

Sorry to hear about the failed swallow study. My daughter was doing OK

with swallowing, but at 1 1/2 years old she started aspirating the liquids

and had 2 weeks of pneumonia every month for 6 months before we got the

g-tube. She's been SOO much healthier since the g-tube that I even sent

back the suction machine. I know Lucas already has a g-tube and you've

already been through that decision, etc., but I just wanted to encourage

you that the oral stimulation can work eventually. It's been 6 months and

I think she's ready for some pureed type stuff...maybe mayo, baby

food. Just have to get some meal plans worked out. TOOO easy with just

the RCF and microlipid. Hang in there.
