Guest guest
Loved your questions!! Re the FM: I learned this from Carol Flexer: Kids learn 90% of what they know by overhearing things that aren't said directly to them. A deaf or HOH kid's ability to overhear anything is drastically reduced compared to a typical hearing kid. You are lucky if they hear and understand what you say to them directly in a one on one situation! So anything you do to help a child learn incidentally will benefit the young child. If you are home alone with your little one, by all means wear the FM and let him overhear your phone chatter. Or if he has an older sibling or a playmate, let them wear the transmitter at times. This goes for dad too! All kids learn language by repeatedly hearing things, kids with hearing loss need to hear things repeated even more. The FM allows them to do this. Carol Flexer's book " Facilitatiing Listening and Hearing in the Young Child " is excellent for us parents, especially ones who are trying to develop listening skills and verbal language. Second, re reading: Another book that influenced me tremendously was Jim Trelease's book on reading out loud to kids (having a mental block right now on the title.) Because a child with a hearing loss misses out on a lot of incidental info and language, reading to them helps bridge those gaps both in language and in information. It also helps build language skills, listening skills and attention span. RE therapy: personally, I loved AV because the parent, who spends much more time with the child, is given the tools to do " therapy " all day, every day. Every experience can become a language or learning or listening time. A half hour of therapy can never give a child the same benefit as playing a rhyming game while in the car with mom several times each day. My daughter started out thinking that lump rhymed with land. But playing rhyming games helped her learn phonemic awareness - those subtle differences in sounds that give meaning. A few times per week with a therapist can't help a child in the same way that sorting laundry with mom can: you can learn names of colors, textures, articles of clothing, degrees of dirtiness or cleaness, dark v. light, following directions, and even throwing skills by sorting laundry and talking/playing while you do it. For example, I would have three different laundry baskets, and we'd play the follow the leader game. I'd say: throw something red into the white basket. Then it would be Maggie's turn to tell me to throw something white into the blue basket. Later we'd say: throw the dirtiest white socks into the square green basket. I got lots of great hints on how to do this by watching Hanen videos and through Clinic lessons. Hope this is helpful. in GA

Guest guest
Hi - I can relate to the dr's making you feel old! I am going to be 41 in Nov and all the two drs here said oh you'd better hurry your clock is ticking you are really up there in age you should probably just give it up - do IVF and do it quickly! WOW talk about depressing! I never felt old up until that point. But talking with Dr. L and seeing all the positive results he's had I don't feel old anymore ( I could cancel the order for the Geritol and the walker ha ha ha)! I'm going on the 22nd also - my tr is sch for 6:30 am - can't have breakfast that morning, but if you are feeling up to it maybe we can have dinner later. Let me know.
