Guest guest
Nan -- Thanks for doing this. A couple thoughts: * Should we give links to the meal planners and tips for those, since that tends to be a common question? * Should we give resources on getting more info on the diet -- Freeman book, Charlie Foundation video, " First Do No Harm, " etc., since that also tends to be a frequently asked question. * We get a lot of new people who want to know everything -- just like we did -- it's hard to respond to all of them. Maybe if we had a standard response with a link to the FAQ's, that would be helpful? * For fevers, there is a Junior Motrin now -- a smaller capsule than the adult version that's easier to swallow. It actually does have a trace of carb -- but even with how sensitive is, it hasn't seemed to cause a problem. * Do we want to add anything about supplements? It can get so confusing. . .I'm still confused! At least, perhaps we want to recommend some good quality vitamins, like the Bio Glycozyme Forte or the Nu-Thera. . .. for those whose neuros are recommending Bugs Bunny and the like. I'd be happy to draft some of this stuff for someone to look over -- knowing that most are far more knowledgable than I! As for sending out the note periodically, would there be any possibility of highlighting what's new? It wouldn't be a pain either way. . .Thanks!--D FAQs OK...here's what I have so far...anything else anyone can think of adding? nan Also...I can have this sent out the the whole group every other month automatically. Would that be a nuisance or a help? I'm going to set it to be sent out to all newbies anyway. Frequently Asked Questions.... Starting the diet is a little daunting. Guest guest
LaVerna you can't get cal/mag/zincII in Canada, I am in Nova Scotia, where are you? YOu might want to go to a health food store and check out Natural Factors caclium supps though. They have some good ones with 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesiu, I have a 1800 number somewhere for the company and you can call and get info you need to calculate it in. I know what you mean about the cost of ordering from the US, and beware Revenue Canada, you will get charged HST or GST on the cal/mag/zincII if you order it (plus the post office charges $5 to collect the tax!) but things like artificial flavourings (Bickfords) should not be taxed although sometimes they try to. If that happens (it did to me once) you have to pay when you pick up the parcel but then you can write to them, tell them to smarten up and they will send you your money back. I now ask Bickford to label very clearly on outside of box " artificial flavours " and that seems to be working to keep the tax man honest Wes Moreland wrote: > Nanette, > This is great! Guest guest
Nan, I've missed a few posts, but it looks like you are putting together an info sheet for new parents. I recently put together one for my neuro. If you are interested, here 'tis...... Kathy in Tennessee What is the ketogenic diet? It is a treatment for epilepsy. The diet must be administered under supervision of a medical doctor and qualified dietitian. It consists of a diet low in carbohydrates, low in protein, and high in fat. How does the ketogenic diet work? Researchers have no definite answer for why the diet works. The diet has been recognized as a treatment for more than 75 years. The diet changes the way the body uses food for energy. A typical body metabolizes mostly carbohydrates into glucose. This glucose is used to fuel the body. The ketogenic diet limits the amount of carbohydrates, therefore forcing the body to find an alternative fuel. The body will then begin to metabolize fat for energy, therefore creating ketone bodies (ketosis). The body can use these ketone bodies as fuel to function as normal. What is the success rate? In studies conducted from the 1920s to the 1980s, a nutshell summary is as follows: The diet completely controlled epilepsy in 1/3 of the children whose seizures were otherwise uncontrollable. In ½ of the remaining children, the diet markedly decreased the frequency of seizures and/or enabled medications to be reduced. Many children whose seizures had been completely controlled could return to a normal diet in 2 or 3 years and remain seizure-free without medication.1 Why does my child have to go into the hospital to start the diet? There are several reasons for the hospital stay. The body will be switching over to the new way of obtaining energy. Although this transition is typically easy, monitoring is required in case of complications such as a drop blood sugar or acidosis. Also, medicine levels may be affected during this transition. During the hospital stay, the caregivers are taught how to administer the diet through training and hands-on application. Is the diet hard to manage? The diet is very rigid and precise. Every gram of food the child eats will be weighed on a gram scale. It is a major adjustment for the family. Meal preparation can be time consuming. Yet, if the diet eliminates the seizures, many families find the diet actually saves time overall. For mobile, independent children, the restrictions that come with the diet can be hard (no birthday cake, no candy bars, etc). But families find that the emotional stress of dealing with these limits doesn't compare with the emotional benefits of seizure control. What if my child doesn't like the food? There is a lot of room for creativity in the diet. Most children can be satisfied and given a wide variety of choices. Older children can be involved in their meal planning. In the beginning, you may do a lot of experimenting with meal plans and recipes. Will my child grow while on the diet? Your doctor will continually monitor the child's growth. If adequate growth is not occurring, adjustments may be made to the child's protein intake. It is a myth that a child will not grow while on the ketogenic diet. In most instances, if proper attention is paid to meal planning, the child should develop at a normal rate. With all the fat in the diet, will my child gain weight? Because the diet is so precisely calculated, calorie control is easily handled. Your doctor will monitor you child's weight very closely. If weight gain (that is not coupled with appropriate height gain) occurs, a calorie reduction may be in order. Can a diet so high in fat be healthy? As with anyone's diet, it is dependent on the make up of the meal plan. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats can be used in the ketogenic diet to maximize nutrient density of the foods. There are healthy fats that can be included. The child is given a multi-vitamin and a calcium/magnesium supplement. Your doctor will monitor your child for any deficiencies, and make any appropriate supplement adjustments. Could my child go off his/her seizure medication? This would be a judgement call of your doctor. Many children can be weaned successfully off some or all of their seizure medication once on the diet. How long will my child be on the diet? This is difficult to say, as this treatment is very individualized. Typically, after the child has been seizure free for two years, your doctor may decide to start weaning the diet. Most of the time, this is a slow wean, taking a year or so. Are there risks or side effects that accompany the diet? Most are uncommon and can be detected or prevented with regular monitoring by your doctor, but side effects could include, but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, " fruity " smell to the breath and urine, acidosis, kidney stones, osteoporosis, hair loss, slowed growth, weight gain, increased lipids, carnitine deficiency. What are the benefits to the diet? Obviously, the main benefit would be seizure control. Medication reduction or elimination is an important benefit to many. Some parents have reported a new alertness in their child after initiation of the diet, independent of medicine changes. Some parents have seen improved behavior and mood. ______________________________________ 1 The Ketogenic Diet - A Treatment for Epilepsy. Third Edition. M. Freeman, MD, B. Guest guest
I think it's a good idea to mention the good quality multi's that we know are carb free..... such as NuThera...... just like the CalMagZinc from Whole Life. Perhaps at some point there could be a " resource folder " for going into more detail on such things as where to buy a good scales, and the addresses of places like Bickfords, Whole Life, Ridge Road, etc. All that would be a little overwhelming for a new-comer who had basic first questions. They might want to know just a little bit about common side effects and success rate..... although those things are addressed in the Freeman book. Just rambling here..... Patti FAQs OK...here's what I have so far...anything else anyone can think of adding? nan Also...I can have this sent out the the whole group every other month automatically. Would that be a nuisance or a help? I'm going to set it to be sent out to all newbies anyway. Frequently Asked Questions.... Starting the diet is a little daunting. Hopefully some of these FAQ's will help as you begin to prepare for initiation and/or face some of the issuesthat come up with the diet. What products can we get to help the diet be more palatable? Sweetners: Many parents use Stevia, a natural sweetener found in most health food stores. Drinks: Getting the fluids in and providing an enjoyable drink during the day is always important. Many parents use 'fruit waters' like the Sam's Choice " Clearly American. " Most of these do contain Aspartame...a seizure trigger for some kids. If you use them, or any of the diet sodas, be sure to watch for any signs that the aspartame may be a trigger. Some of the 'fruit waters' also contain sugars...be sure to read the label. Bickford Flavorings...great carb free flavorings to help create tasty dishes...They are non-alcoholic, contain no sugar and no salt. Hundreds of flavors are available by calling (216)531-6006 with credit card orders. Bickford Flavors 19007 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44117 " sweetening ice cream, making popsicles, making " keto-drinks. Guest guest
I'm a little concerned about the club soda thing. Now I used Club Soda to stop the ketone bounce and lower acidity, but I was always careful how much I used. Is it really OK for every-one to use it freely. I think this might have caused 's PH to go too high (like around 7) He always did best at 6. May-be I am just confused, but I think some kids need the acidity?*%$.............confusing But it looks wonderful otherwise. Guest guest
That's hard because it's so different for each kid. Notorious ones include strawberries, carrots, hot dogs or anything with nitrates, aspartame (sugar free jello, soda, etc).... Guest guest
Hi, Someone was having trouble getting their child to eat keto food. I can only suggest the cheesecake made with margarine or butter and vegetables, then adding the cream with soda and keto sweetener. I have ben told that it is not very nutricious because of overcoooking but if it works what the hell theis diet isn't nutricious. Oh yes . Make sure you increase fluids in thsi hot weather or you will run into all sorts of problems. bill swoyer wrote: > > That's hard because it's so different for each kid. > Notorious ones include strawberries, carrots, hot dogs or anything with > nitrates, aspartame (sugar free jello, soda, etc).... > Barb Swoyer > Re: FAQs > > > .. > > > > I opened a folder at the site called 'seizure triggers' and have a list > like > > this in it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ketogenic/files The things I > don't > > have is a list of foods that could be possible triggers.
