Hi,

I have started to deal with something like this. My fingers started with what

look like a simple hangnail but it has just kept going now I have areas on

my thumbs and around fingernails that look like areas of flesh just bursting

through the skin. It hurts and doesn't seem to be clearing up. Cpuld this be

yet another EDS thing?

Hi ,

I didn't respond earlier because Petra's problems didn't sound like

anything we had tackle but now that I think about it had similar

problems when he was first diagnosed with the latex allergy. The skin

peeled and fell off in chuncks where the tape we used to stabilize his

fingers touched the skin.

This may be totally off base but figured that it was worth mentioning.

When the latex was eliminated and the cellulitis treated everything

cleared up quickly.

Hi Sue, What type of eds do you have, Petra is being tested for vascular.

She also bruises like crazy. What you have stated is exactly what Petra is

going through.

Hi ,

My elder daughter, Ann has the same problems with the skin round her

nail beds. She has Hypermobile EDS like me but I also have vascular

overlays. Ann is allergic to latex, many drugs, and washing up

liquid. When she has to wash dishes at her work, after a lunch

meeting, etc her hands break out and the skin peels within a day of

exposure to washing up liquid. I used to think it was an excuse not

to do dishes but have since realised that she has a real problem. Of

course, I bought her rubber gloves before I found out she was

allergic to latex and that made the problem worse. Even cotton

gloves under the rubber gloved did not help at all.

I hope you can find the trigger for Petra as it is extremely painful.

Avoidance of the substance is the only answer. Ann uses only pure

unscented soap to wash her hands and find that she can get by with

that. Which reminds me, I am highly allergic to Palmolive soap or

toothpaste. It makes me so violently sick that I break the blood

vessels around my eyes and on my cheeks and my eyes swell up so much

that I can hardly open them. Gosh, I have not thought about that in

40 years!!!

Good luck in finding what causes this to Petra. It may be a process

of elimination, but worth the effort.

Love and hugs,

Lilian

Petra may want to try and keep her fingers away from her mouth at

all times if she is a nail biter, if she is not, then she may want

to try a thick moisturizer like Neutrogena Hand cream or the like,

this solves the problem for me!

Thanks Jill, I have a feeling, That moisture has alot to do with it.

Are you familar with fishers spelling? because Petra has had one and

it was bleeding quite badly

Isn't a fisher a form of a tear? Petra was not even constipated. when this

happened. Do these complications

happen with VEDS? Thanks

I am confused. Where is the dry and peeling skin located? When you

mentioned fissure just now, I started to think of different things, other

than her hands!

An anal fissure is a fairly common painful condition in which a portion of

the skin lining in the anal canal is torn. The anal canal is the

cylindrical tube at the end of the rectum which ends at the anus. Stool

passes through the anal canal and anus during a bowel movement. An anal

fissure is generally caused by constipation or a forceful bowel movement.

Once the skin is torn, each subsequent bowel movement can be painful. This

pain is often quite severe. Many times there is bleeding associated with

the painful bowel movement. Blood may be noticed in the toilet bowel or on

the toilet paper and is generally bright red in colour. The symptoms of an

anal fissure are commonly mistaken for haemorrhoids, but haemorrhoids

generally do not cause pain with bowel movements.

This is common to all people, not VEDS alone.

Have you contacted Dr. Meschino yet or gotten a repeat test from Sick Kids

yet? I'd get on this straight away for the diagnosis point of view.

Hi Jill, I did get a hold of Sick Kids and they took another slice of the

biopsy from the one they had there.

According to them everything is going well. They are growing the cells

there and then they are sending to Seattle.

this was happening two to three weeks ago. So it should be there. I was

talking with Pepin.

She told me once the cells are grown it should take no longer than two to

three weeks. Melaine seems to want to

stay on top of things I think you might be familar with her. She has a

couple of articles on the site.

Petra's skin is peeling around the finger nails, Some times big chunks

come off. My main concern is

her bowel movements because she is not constipated. Her stool has good

form. There was alot of blood

from this fissure. Please get back to me. thanks
