Guest guest
Hi Amy and everyone! I haven't been on for a while, I have been so busy, but I had to add to this conversation. By the way, Amy - great rant! It's really good to see a group of women who can think for themselves! Shape magazine is getting to be like Self, unfortunately. A couple of years ago I was interviewed by Figure magazine for an article about exercise motivation. I had never heard of this magazine, but instantly liked it. Here's the description of it that they give on their website: " figure is for women of all shapes and sizes. The magazine addresses their everyday concerns in the areas of fashion, beauty, health, fitness and relationships. figure embraces real women and offers the tools they need to achieve their goals, find their passions, and love their lives. " There used to be a similar magazine called Grace that wouldn't even use a model unless she was at least a size 12 - very cool! But I don't think they are around anymore. Anyway, Figure's website is http://www.figuremagazine.com . You can subscribe or pick it up at Lane , Fashion Bug, or s clothing stores and it may be at bookstores too. From the few issues I have read, they don't really talk about weight loss or dieting, just about living your life fully now no matter your size. I love this concept. Thanks! Guest guest
Most " health " magazines are like that. I used to like Prevention -- when it was about health. Now it's all about losing weight and always has some skinny chick clad in a bikini or skimpy exercise wear on the cover -- same with Shape. Guest guest
Oh Amy... you are so right!!!!It kills me when I look at Shape magazine and they proclaim to be about healthy eating, promoting a positive image for women and accepting yourself, yada yada... but at the same time it's loaded with advertisements for diet pills and drinks. Isn't it amazing the messages that women are being bombarded with on a daily basis... It makes me worry even more about young girls today and what they feel about their bodies.amytherrien wrote: For a while, I was hooked on "Self" magazine because I thought it was healthy. Guest guest
I'll guess that I'll be honest and acknowledge that I'm truly not up to that point yet. I can't let go of the Weight Watchers, Self, and Prevention mags quite yet. I HAVE however, banished titles like Fitness and Shape from my reading list. That may seems like a double standard, but at least I feel that it's progress, and I'm the sure the others will come later. I do take some solace in knowing that I'm capable of censoring which articles I read and which tidbits and pages I can flip right past. Again, I know that doesn't justify it, but I'm working on it. love, Deanna > > For a while, I was hooked on " Self " magazine because I thought it > was healthy. Guest guest
You can see the lie right-out, eh? Tea (caffinated, anyway) will only make you MORE hungry ... like we've discussed on here before, about how caffeine creates MORE cravings. Won't do ya any good. Mind you, what do you guys (all on the list) believe about the Green Tea? Some people say it has really good benefits. Anyone here believe that? (And, I'm not just talking about how some people say drinking x-cups of Green Tea/day will help with weight loss, either). I like the " ORGANICS Earl Grey Green Tea " , but have found that the decaf. green tea makes my stomach hurt. :-? Guest guest
On magazines like Self and Shape, like the other things in my life, I take what I can use and leave the rest. I don't like the ad's and I sure don't like the mentality but if there is something I want to read in there I will still buy it . By the way, my ex boyfriend once showed me a girl before and after those magazine retouches they do. Big big diff!!!! They are not that perfect, the magazine just makes them that way (silly) Yes, I do. I just wish more people would.> >> > Most " health " magazines are like that. Guest guest
Diets make money. A new diet in a magazine sells. A new diet book sells. I don’t think any magazine wants to promote nondieting. Everyone is looking for that quick fix and that is what sells. So I doubt if they will listen when we promote something that doesn’t involve dieting. Vicki From: IntuitiveEating_Support [mailto:IntuitiveEating_Support ] On Behalf Of Jenn S. Guest guest
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. My husband loves to point out to me the fact that they do touch-ups and airbrushing to the models on magazine covers. In fact, at the conference/simulcast I went to last Saturday, the one woman was talking about weight issues, and she brought this topic of magazines up. She showed several slides of magazine covers before and after they'd been " worked on " ... and it was AMAZING! They even used a double for Martha 's body on one of them! They just cut-and-pasted her head onto someone else's *thinner* body! :-O Amazing. (I found it amusing, too, when the woman showed what Angelina Jolie used to look like -- before surgeries to make her look the way she does....) ;o) Jenn <>< --- (the *new*..) wrote: On magazines like Self and Shape, like the other things in my life, I take what I can use and leave the rest. Guest guest
True enough. But I don't think it'd hurt to try! Once this really catches on, dieting will be " out " . ;o) I found it really interesting -- in the book I'm currently reading ( " The Secrets of Skinny Chicks " ), she said something like " Diets are out... everyone knows they don't work. " I had been on the phone with my hubby as I read that, and I laughed out loud. I read this part to him, and then said, " That's not true... People are still HUGE on diets! Maybe not as much as at one point, but diets aren't yet " out " ... " (unfortunately). :-? Jenn <>< > > Diets make money. A new diet in a magazine sells.
