Hi All

New member here, so I hope you don't mind the intrusion, but I just

couldn't let this pass without comment -- 1200-1600 calories/day?

For athletes no less? Only two reviews at Amazon so far, but one of

them echos my thoughts: " ...a monument to our tragic times... " It

seems to me that IE becomes just another gimmick for pretending you

aren't hungry if it's going to be combined with such severe calorie

restrictions....

or dieting rules in the book. I still want to check out this book

to see what other athletes are thinking and what cues they listen to

in order to know they should eat more. I think I'm getting pretty

good an looking past diet garbage to see any useful advice.

One particular thing I am interested is how to deal with the fact

that when I push myself really hard, I sometimes lose my appetite.

All food becomes unappealing...even my favorites. Should I force

myself to eat even though I don't feel hungry? I'm not sure what IE

has to say about this situation...it wasn't in the book that I

read.

You know, Amy, I don't really know of books that discuss IE for the

athlete. You wanna write one? :-)

I have read something recently about exercise and appetite,

but I can't find it right now. I will keep looking. I know what you

mean, though. This has happened to me, too. For me, the hunger is

sometimes delayed into the next day -- then I'll be really hungry at

breakfast and sometimes even throughout the day until I " catch up. "

The only thing I would worry about is using exercise to control your

appetite -- I've done that, too. I think it might produce a

similar effect as ignoring your hunger sometimes has --- your

appetite just goes away, which is an adaptive response to

undereating. But don't you find you can tell the difference between

no appetite because you've undereaten versus no appetite because

you've eaten enough?

There are so few resources for intuitive eaters.....

many IE books out there if you look but this is the best one in my

on the days I work out I have a really big appetite (forme at least). On the days I stay home and have a lower activity rate, I find I eat a lot less. My body seems to regulate it somehow .

The only exception is PMS when I would eat the couch!!

My excersise routine Mahellena is as follows:

M/W/Fri: 1 hour on elliptical , each day using a different program (ie strength,hill interval, cardio etc)

Sometimes 1.20 hours. Weight/resistance training for about 45 min to an hour on these days as well

Tu/Th/Sat: 1 hour on elliptical varying as I said the program

Sunday: Either off or lesser cardio work out such as 1/2 hour to 45 min.

It seems like a lot but keeps me happy and healthy and balanced

Not really Maehellena, I do use the website www.sparkpeople.com (hope thats ok, that is how I found out about IE actually) for eating recipes and tips, just don't get caught up in the diet mentality if you go there, I use it as a resource and for fun community but I am careful not to get into the diet thing !!

I think that's only true of mild exercise. It's definitely not true of

running or aerobics or biking. I'm almost always hungrier on the days I work

out hard on the elliptical or bike, but not on the days I just walk a few

miles.

I think whether your experience a loss of appetite is an individual

experience based on fitness level. For me, it occurs when I push

myself to exhaustion. I'm not that in shape so after 80 minutes of

running, I hit that point. I don't feel tired, but all thoughts of

food make me nauseous. It lasts for several hours. When I run 45-

60min, this feeling doesn't happen and I actually feel hungrier as

mentioned below. Running is not really mild exercize for me, but it

looks like duration is a factor.

Yea if I do a half hour etc. I am not hungry, when I truly push, which is most of my work outs, I feel very hungry (but within reason, its not really over the top, just compartively speaking).

Maybe you are even pushing past what your body can handle though, and this is causing nausea.

My workouts last 1.5 to 2 hours on average, 6 days a week. I think if i went over that i could get sick as some days I really feel I might be overdoing it even at this rate.

But yea, my appetite goes up or down with how much work I do excersise wise, with the upside being when I do more.

Yea if I do a half hour etc. I am not hungry, when I truly push, which is most of my work outs, I feel very hungry (but within reason, its not really over the top, just compartively speaking).

Maybe you are even pushing past what your body can handle though, and this is causing nausea.

My workouts last 1.5 to 2 hours on average, 6 days a week. I think if i went over that i could get sick as some days I really feel I might be overdoing it even at this rate.

But yea, my appetite goes up or down with how much work I do excersise wise, with the upside being when I do more.

Keep in mind, I still continue to lose weight weekly, so when I say I am really hungry, it is all relative .

Really hungry for me could be not so hungry for someone else or visa versa.
