RE: Waking up hungry?

Maybe your body is telling you that you

need a little more food. Can you try eating a little more before bed or

throughout the day?

Do any of you have this issue? I wake up almost like clock work since I

started working out more (and I enjoy working out at this level, it isn't that

I feel I have to, it is a natural anti depressant for me and I love it)

and I am hungry 2 to 3 hours after I go to sleep. So if I go to bed at say 8pm

I will wake up around 11pm. etc etc.

I am usually hungry for carbs , last night I ate some graham

crackers....

The thing is, I don't really enjoy this, it is like a mechanical

physical thing not a " I want to have something to eat' thing.

Can anyone else explain this or think of ways to stop

it? Thanks!!

(i have had the issue in the past before but it had gone completely away for a

long time, last time I had it was stress related, I have no stress to speak of

now in my life)

I say go with it. Its too bad you don't enjoy it but if you know your body is calling then listen right? Could be just a phase, it did this for awhile too. Since I am hypoglycemic I have to eat snacks all day anyway and once in awhile i have to get out of bed still but not consistantly anymore. wrote: Do any of you have this issue? Yea i am hypoglycemic too, I guess that is probably it. I am going to go with my own gut this week a little more on eating and working out instead of what I think I 'should do' and see if it helps...we will see.

I'm not sure if this is totally the same thing...but this is what I

have experienced. I frequently fall asleep on the couch waiting for

my husband. When he wakes me up to go to bed, I am famished and

crave carbs. It's not the hunger that wakes me up though. If I go

directly to bed instead of falling asleep on the couch first, I

sleep through the night. Do you think it is the hunger that is

waking you up or something else? The hunger is a side-effect for

me.

One thing I did read on SP was that having trouble sleeping is a

sign of overtraining, which always seemed counter-intuitive to me.

If you are working out hard, shouldn't you be MORE tired? Anyway,

if overtraining is a possibility, you can experiment by giving

yourself a day off once in a while or going light on exercize

occassionally to see if it makes a difference. I think the thing

about overtraining is that it's not really all that healthy. It is

possible to exercize too much. As you probably already know, rest

is a key component to gaining muscle mass.

I hope you can find a solution.

Hi Amy,

I am not sure on the overtraining thing. I work out quite a bit lately but not sure if it is enough to say stop my periods or anything. It is 2 hours Mon/Wed/Friday (a mix of cardio/strength/stretching) and 1 to 1.5

hours on Tue/Thu/Sat and maybe 1/2 hour on Sundays. Then I get days off when I go down to San Diego, sometimes as many as 5 days off! I am and have been losing a lot and toning up really nicely and feel really happy.

I don't get emotional as much as I used to either on this work out regime. Once I am where I want to be tone wise I do think I will cut it down to every other day but for now I just feel it is important to get where I want to be, I don't see it as a diet though since I really do like this and enjoy it....it is fun for me and makes me feel really good . I was severely depressed last year, talk about feeling better !!

It could be my hypoglycemia or yes I don't sleep 100% in this house, it was our vacation house and it is in the mountains and things scare me a lot . We have kangaroo mice too that try and get in the house but I have cats but that does not mean the buggers don't try! I also get raccooons that climb up my 30 foot deck and my dogs go wild. Yea.....lol, as you see it is quite an adventure around here.

I have pretty much trained myself in this house not to sleep 100% due to all these little events, have even had bears in the trash and coyotes trying to steal my dog.

So you could be right, I don't think its real true hunger but it is like a mechanical reaction of some sort where I " must' eat or drink OJ at the minimum. It is just annoying when I know I really am not 100% hungry but just needy. (not in an emotional way though, just a tired way). My blood sugar does feel shaky when this happens but maybe I will try OJ only next time and not have the food with it.

Anyway thanks for the input, I will try some things and also keep in mind about overtraining especially if my period ever is late etc.

What a way to turn around your life, ! Turning to exercise

to overcome depression is such a positive choice. So smart!

Since overtraining is a personal thing, you are definitely are the

best person to judge " intuitively " for yourself. I found a list of

other symptoms that you can look for too. Even if you are not

overtraining now, it can happen from time to time...especially since

those endorphins can sometimes hide pain.

Symptoms:

Washed-out feeling, tired, drained, lack of energy

Mild leg soreness, general achiness

Pain in muscles & joints

Sudden drop in performance

Insomnia

Headaches

Decreased immunity (increased number of colds, and sore throats)

decrease in training capacity / intensity

moodiness and irritability

depression

loss of enthusiasm for the sport

decreased appetite

increased incidence of injuries.

I've been gone for a few days but this is me totally!!!! I haven't

read further to see if anyone has answered but it is nice to know

that someone else has the same problem.

I did this for a while in the beginning

of IE. It is because you are not eating enough at night, but it is hard at

first to be aware of that. Go ahead and eat when you wake up hungry, and when

you eat your last meal for the day make sure you eat enough to be full, but not

stuffed. If you are eating a lot of veggies at dinner time then they will not

last the night. But you will figure it out all on your own, that is the ‘magic’

of IE, you will discover your own uniqueness.
