Well, what is the earmold is made of? The most common materials for children are silicone (a matte, really flexible material) or vinyl, which is a bit harder and shinier, but softens up as it warms to body temperature. One deductive solution is to remove the earmold from the hearing aid before placing it in the drying kit, and see if that helps. As an aside, I've been a faithful Super Seals user for years. I ran out, and didn't have a couple of days to wait for a shipment, so I went to Wal-Mart and bought some balloons, you know the kind you can twist into animal shapes? It was about $1.50 for the bag of 20 balloons. They're sturdier than super seals, but the SS tool works well. Cut down the balloon to the right length, and then just pop it on to the HA! I couldn't believe how easy it was. It also looks like the balloons will last a bit longer, as they're thicker material. The only thing I'm a LITTLE worried about is the fact that the inside of the balloon is a little bit powdered...I'm hoping the powder isn't going to have any kind of impact on the HA. We'll see! --kerri

Earmolds do get old and harden. Our audiologist will replace the tubing 2-3 times during the life of the earmold and replaces the earmold when it gets hard. JD's had his for about 10 months now and last month his audiologist said his earmold was too hard and took impressions for new ones. This last set seemed to discolor and harden faster than usual because last time he went about a year before getting new ones (he's 13). We'll see! How about turning the balloon inside out before using it in this way? Can't hurt to try. Or, turn it inside out, wipe off the powder, then turn it right side out again. Should be a since with the expander tool. Kay

The powder DOES make the balloon a bit easier to deal with, but wiping off excess will make ME feel better. :-) --kerri

It depends on the material used, but nine months is a long time. Most of the silastic type earmolds will lose their flexibility in that amount of time, as oils, dirt, and other ear " stuff " affect the material. Guest guest
Could someone please explain again what you do with the water balloons? I read the original message but must have missed part of it because I didn't understand it. Thanks.
