Hmmm, I think I'd tell them to NEVER go on a diet, EVER. It only makes you obsess about food and eat way too much when you do "splurge". Tell them not to believe that you "can't" eat pizza or other "bad" foods. You just can't stuff yourself silly with them. about issues that they face, one of them being body image. She knew i was practicing IE and so that is one of the things I will be talking about.I am really excited but I am nervous too.I was wondering if I could get a list of all the points that people found most important in IE.Such as using our fist as a guide. How does everyone feel about this? The girls in the highschools here are so heavy, much heavier then even when i was in high school and that was only 6 years ago!I really want to encourage them along this path so any advice would be much appreciated.Ash

That's awesome, ! Congrats! That's something I'd love to do... talk to the

teen girls in the area about Intuitive Eating. If we can get them while they're

young, and before they get so influenced by the media screaming at them to be

" eating-disorder " thin (no offense to those who've struggled/who struggle with

this... I'm taking this from an article I read online), then maybe we can help

them to avoid this struggle to get BACK to " normal eating " . :o)

See my blog, ... maybe it'll have something you can use:

Agreed... show them the statistics that say that 95% of all diets fail... maybe get examples from people who've tried repeated diets and found they didn't work... We have a few of those people right here in this group! Weren't there two that said just last week that they tried counting calories again, and found that they'd *gained* weight while doing that? :o)

One of those was me. I counted calories meticulously for 2 weeks and gained 6 pounds. I was also exercising every weekday (alternating a 1.5 mile power walk one day and toning exercises the next) .

Ash, congrats, that's a wonderful honor. The one that stuck out to me

is understanding that you and your body are smart enough to be healthy

and to stop eating when full. I DID NOT trust my body, I disrepected it

and thought it was too flawed to ever make good decisions. That was

from years of dieting. I now realize that my body was failing because

it was fighting me to be healtier. Who knew my body was smarter than

me? Just needed to get my brain to catch up!

Hi all,

I've been lurking. I'm a dietitian who specialized in intuitive eating back in the 80s, tho we called it nondiet then. Am looking for lists to which I can refer my clients for support and connection. I recovered from severe diet trauma many years ago and have found intuitive eating the most delicious freedom.

I wanted to comment on this post. When I lecture, I spend about 1/2 hour on the problems with diets. I have all sorts of angles I use, but I find that as long as someone has any remaining belief that diets will work, they will not be able to make the shift. I'm attaching one of the handouts I use, it is from the work of Kathy Kater. I recommend her book Real Kids.

I've also found that the more focused on weight a person is, the harder it becomes to free oneself with intuitive eating. I spend much time with my clients helping them to be happy and comfortable with themselves exactly as they are. Ironically, those that achieve this are more likely to be the ones that get to their natural healthy weight. When they quit trying to get there,,,it arrives!!!

Thanks for all your sharing and for focusing on intuitive eating! Oh, I've got some things at my website, free, that might be helpful. And we have a monthly ezine too.
