HI

Thats got to be tough - I think your best bet might be to try to find him

another kid

around his age who is on the diet he can talk to, email with or something....I

don't know

of anyone but could you check with your ketoteam, maybe someone through this

list or try

the Charlie Foundation?

Hi ,

I know how frustrating it is when we can see improvements but the kids

constantly complain about the food. I found keto pasta, keto pancakes and

keto syrup at 1800dietfoods.com Kelsey loves it and it helps break up the

other things she has to eat. The pancakes have alot of protein in them so

she doesn't even eat any bacon or sausage with it. Lately she also likes

deviled eggs with pepperoni and strawberries.

Another option may be to lower the ratio. It may be better than giving up

all together. At 4:1 Kelsey wasn't having any seizures but she could not

tolerate the food at that level. After lowering the level to 3.5:1 for two

weeks, we lowered it again to 3:1. She kept having seizures until we removed

sugar-free jello and put her on Cal-Mag-Zinc II. It has been around 8 or 9

weeks now and she hasn't had a seizure. Her birthday was this week and

several girls slept over and they didn't get to sleep until 1 AM but Kelsey

was fine the next morning when they got up at 8 a.m.

Hope things will work out for you.

Love,

and Kelsey

I know there are a few parents on the list (I think , Kelsey's Mom was

one) who have suggested that their older children have the ability to e-mail

back and forth so they can meet other kids on the diet and talk about it.

Might be worth a shot!--DeEtte

Dear , what ratio is your son on, and how many

calories does he get? I am wondering if we couldn't

work up a meal or two in which the carbs were in pasta

or cereal.....would he settle for the amount he can

have? Or would it be a worse battle? I feel for you.

Our son is completely non-verbal, and hasn't been

using his keyboard for anything other than school

responses yet, but soon he will be telling us just how

he feels........and I dread it, as well as look

forward to it. Love, Deb

Hi ...

It just might be an excellent idea someone else had...to lower the ratio,

then try to get some of the low carb things that will fit in the lower

ratio. Lots of the kids seem to be able to tolerate the lower ratio and it

makes a HUGE difference in the amount of carbs they can have. Also...Faye

mentioned her taco shells, pizza crust and other things. They have gotten

VERY good reviews from the parents and children who have made them and they

are made from egg whites, so it'd still leave room for carbs. You can check

them out in the files at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ketogenic/files Look

at the recipes and see what you can come up with. Maybe he'd like to go

through the files as well and help you pick what to try. Some of the kids

even have BETTER control on a lower ratio, so it's not some wild thing to

try. My son does best on around a 2:1 ratio. It allows his meals to be

very close to normal as well! Since your son's in soccer I'm guessing he's

fairly active...do you have the cals set as high as you can without him

gaining weight? That'd let you have more carbs as well. Hopefully you can

work through this....you are so right though...at that age, it has to be his

choice. Best wishes...Nan

Deb:

My son is on 4:1 since 3.5:1 was too low (tons of seizures after having

none). His calories are 1500 per day since he's a skinny little thing

(28.5kg) for his age. I have tried noodles when he was on 3.5:1 and he got

7 elbow noodles! I also tried Cheerios on 4:1 and he got 14 1/2 cheerios!

He decided that it teased him too much to have that little.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks Nan:

I'll try looking through the files for some more recipes. Right now he's

neither gaining nor losing weight so I would say his calories are pretty

well bang on. I'm reluctant to lower the ratio only because we had a bad

experience earlier when we tried it. I will discuss with our team perhaps a

slightly lower ratio. I'm just hoping that once we're through allergy

season then things will settle down and I hope he'll be more compiant again.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Oh, that's too bad. We have the opposite

problem.....more seizures when ketones are too high.

If we go above 80, we get more myoclonics. Nate is

now on a 2.5 to 1, with 1530 cals/day, and gets a lot

of carbs, comparatively. We find that whatever ratio

we are on, after a while, his ketones will rise, and

we will have to drop the ratio. Heading for another

drop soon.

In the menu lists are ideas for imitation pasta and

things, I hope you can find something he likes. That

has to be the hardest part. Love, D
