Hi ,

I am in Northern California. I live in a town called Paradise, believe it

or not. I am about 1 1/2 hours northeast of Sacramento.

I know of one person who has seen . She is actually a client of

mine right now (I do coaching all by phone so I can work with her, she's

in So. Cal.). She liked and felt she got benefit, but for some

reason she is just now starting to " get it " and eat

intuitively. I am sure it has nothing to do with me, just different

people are ready to make changes at certain times, you know? Sometimes

you have to hear something many times before you get it or take action.

If you work with , I would love to know how it goes. I love her

book and have a lot of respect for her. She is truly a pioneer and I am

grateful she brought Intuitive Eating into the public

consciousness!

Thanks,

Gillian

Gillian, I've heard of Paradise. We used to have a kids program on our local christian radio station that came out of Paradise, BEEUTIFUL, Paradise, CA! LOL! That's the way the man on the show would tell the address at the end of it.

I live in South OC, too, and met with in early September and

have another appointment tonight. It's $195 for the first consulation

(1.5 hours) and then $95 for every session thereafter (30 minutes). I

REALLY liked her. I am also seeing a therapist outside of , so

I'm working on my food issues from 2 different angles. The thing

about is that she gets it. I can tell her about

getting " panicky " when I overeat and she gets it. Sometimes it's hard

for me to share my eating issues and feelings with others b/c I feel

like most people don't understand or think I'm crazy.

I have been working on IE for almost 1.5 years. I've improved a lot,

but I really wanted in-person counseling b/c I haven't been able to

get past the bingeing/restricting totally, and fall back into it in

periods of stress or when I'm feeling a lot of negative emotions.

One thing I learned from is that even though I rationally know

that bingeing is going to make me feel worse, just knowing it won't

solve the problem. She said it will take time b/c my brain needs to

make new connections in which I actually associate feeling sick with

bingeing. She also said that restricting has messed up my biological

signals (which I totally agree with). I've actually been eating a lot

more food since I met with her, haven't had a full-out binge in 2

weeks, and haven't gained a pound (I don't really have any weight to

lose, as I'm on the thin side but used to be even thinner when I was

just restricting and not bingeing).

I just really like having someone who understands the problem to talk

to.

What’s it like seeing a therapist?

How do they help you get past the food/emotional issues?

Maybe I should see one?

I have a lot of issues going on with my mom right now, so I

originally started seeing the therapist to deal with those issues

(and to learn how to deal with her). Mostly, it's a venting session

with the therapist pointing out how to deal with different

situations. Sometimes she gives me homework. For example, the last

assignment was to try to treat my mom like a peripheral planet,

rather than the center of my universe. Seems to be working so far.

I have a very toxic, narcissistic mother, and it's easy to get

wrapped up in her stories, needs, bitterness, anger, and everything

else that comes along with her. I actually look forward to the

sessions.

As for the food issues, my therapist is working more with me on the

emotional side and why I'm feeling such intense emotions that I

don't reveal to anyone else (which typically leads me to binge).

Hi Lindley,

Thanks so much for your e-mail. I'm glad to know you like . How did your session go tonight?

Do you think working with her is really beneficial for you? I want to go but really can't afford it. I'm hoping our new insurance may cover nutrition counseling because I'm hypoglycemic.

Where do you live in So. OC? I'm in Mission Viejo.

Hi -

I'm in Ladera Ranch. We're close by! The session last night was

great. had me do some visualizations and we worked on how I

am supposed to figure out that I am hungry, rather than always

waiting for my stomach to growl (which happens when I am at a 2

and/or close to a 1). We also talked about doing a narrative when I

start to compare myself to others (I tend to do that a lot at the

gym). And finally, she answered a bunch of my questions about

whether measuring out portions was good (I'm trying to do more

eyeballing rather than using measuring cups), etc. The biggest

thing I took from our meeting is that I shouldn't try to do

everything at once b/c the whole IE process is just that -- a

process. I am such an " all or nothing " person and want everything

done right now and perfectly, which typically leads to me throwing

up my arms and giving up on IE (which I've done, oh, I don't know-12

times in the last 1.5 years??!!).

I meet every 2 weeks with her. The nice thing is that I am looking

at this process as a 2-week process, which works for my mental

state. :)

Hi Lindley!

Wow! You're just down the street! I live between Crown Valley & Oso and close to Marguerite. We should get together sometime! Do you have any young children? I have a 4 year old.

I'm so glad you're enjoying your sessions. It sounds like you're getting a lot out of them. I'm also an "all or nothing" person and want it to work now! I know IE is a process and takes time, but it's so hard for me to realize that. I guess that's why I've always tried so many different diets because I want quick results. Accepting myself is my biggest hurdle.

P.S. I always compare myself to others too. My negative self-talk is really bad. By the way, which gym do you go to? I go to Total Woman on Marguerite and Trabuco.

Hi -

We do live really close by! No kids yet-just 2 poodles. :) We're

talking babies in the next year or so, which is why I am working so

hard on IE. I really do not want to pass on my poor eating habits and

low self-esteem to my kids (especially since I seem to have been so

easily influenced by my own mother's eating habits and comments about

my weight as a child).

Lindley,

How exciting that you're talking about babies. You won't pass your eating habits to your kids because you know better now! You don't want them to end up like you so you'll do everything differently. It's amazing what an intuitive eater my 4-yr-old is. He is a great example for me! If he's not hungry, he won't eat - even if it's cookies or ice cream!

I've never heard of Equinox. Is it a mixed gym? I love Total Woman - all the women are "normal" looking. Not a beauty contest or pick-up place. Just there to work out. I used to belong to LA Fitness years ago. I didn't care for it. Even if I move (which we might be), I'll always join an all women's gym.

Yes, it's a mixed gym. It's based out of New York. I really love the

gym-the classes are all very innovative, the teachers are great, and

all the yoga and mat pilates I want to take is included in the price

(even though the yoga and mat pilates classes are in their own studio,

separate from the aerobics room). You know how it is living in OC-it

seems like everyone is 100 pounds, tan, and drives a Mercedes. ;) I

have a problem of comparing myself to others, which I'm working on

right now. But it's hard when I live in this area!
