Guest guest
Robin - I agree that the school is trying to give you the run-around. As far as I'm concerned, the SCHOOLS are the ones that are not qualified to decided which services your child needs. Which " law " was she referring to when she said " that by law he does not qualify for the school program? " I'd ask to see that law. oh...and BTW...the schools don't give services for free. They get funding, and the SLP's, OT's and PT's get paid. Does your SLP understand IDEA? And why is the SLP calling you to tell you this? A meeting should be held and you should be told IN WRITING why services are being denied. You DON'T have to put up with this... Where are you again? Guest guest
Robin, what an awful position to be put in. I know a lot of the ladies on this list have been in your shoes.... having to prove to others that their child IS indeed behind, delayed, autistic, whatever. No parent should have to be put in a place where the burden of proof is on them. You would hope that it is the school trying to convince the parent to " see the light " about their child, not the other way around. Fight the school. Just keep at it, and don't just make threats. Give them warnings and follow through. Like you said -- it's total bullsh*t! Sorry you're going through this.... Grace I am so frustrated and mad at the school system > > I am so frustrated and mad at the school system. The speech pathologist call me this morning from my son school. And she told me that my son will not qualify for the speech services. She said he was drop from the program at the age of 5 because they felt he did not need it anymore. She said even though I had him tested at children's that does not qualify for services at school. Even though they are recommending him to have 2 to 3 times a week speech therapy. She told me that by law he does not qualify for the school program and that these medical professional are only out there for the money not for our kids. That the schools does this for free and they do it for the kids. Which is such bullsh**!! Sorry about my french! Even told her about the in home program that my son receives from the aba program. And she told me they are not qualified to tell me that my son needs speech either. And that they are not train to do so. She did not sound like she approved of this aba program at all. And then too top it off she said that they don't see my son is being autistic at all. Telling me that he is well liked and is well behaved. The only problem he has academic delays which is being address. Even though speech, ot and pt recommend he have these services at school. The school keeps telling me that he won't be able to get these services. Even with the IQ testing that I had done at children either did not make a difference. She told me that he does not meet the criteria for the services. That they go by much lower score. For instance he is 7 half and probably at a 5 year level. The only way he could get services is the score fell way below a 5 year level like 3 year level would get him the services. Which again is such bullsh**!!!!!!!!! Why should my son have to keep struggling with all his delays and not get the help he needs. And I have not heard anything about him failing this year at all. I don't think he is ready for 2nd grade. He is below average and I think he is being pushed through the system. I am my children's mom and will not let them push my kids through the system when they deserve alot more. I am a mom on a mission to help my children get the best education they deserve and nothing less! Sorry so long but I needed to vent! Thank you for listening to me. > > Robin > > > > SAHM of 2 , 7 yr. son has adhd, bipolar and pdd, 4 yr daughter has pdd and adhd. > http://www.msnusers.com/specialchildrenwithspecialneeds Yahoo IM: momsmission2 > > > --------------------------------- >

Guest guest
Robin, It sounds like you really need an advocate. Once again, call disability groups in your area. Tell them the whole story. If nothing else, there are bound to be parents in your area that have fought battles like yours and won who can tell you what they did. Also, there's a EIP group at Yahoo that has some great info on handling schools and their excuses. I don't remember the name of the group offhand (anybody else know it?), but if you search they groups for " EIP " you'll get it. Guest guest
Robin, I have the same problem with my school system on the speech. They don't test for the type of problems my son has. If they haven't done an actual evaluation of him at the school, put in writing that you want him to have a full evaluation for speech and language, fine and gross motor skills. You can even request the autism evaluation since everything he'll get at school depends on his being diagnosed by the school. If you don't want them to do it, you can request it be done by your intermediate school district. Be sure to send the letter certified mail so you have proof they received it, and they have to comply within 30 days! Keep fighting, and start learning all you can about your rights. Guest guest
Robin: I know you have had a lot of good advice from others on this list, but they really can't get away with this stuff forever. Keep insisting and be a real pain and maybe they will give him the supports he needs. Sorry you are going through this. Salli
