Good Morning.....

I have a quick question. Our school principle stands behind a strong

belief that NO ONE is allowed to pick the teacher they feel would be best for

the a child. That NO ONE includes the AVT, the Special Ed teacher or ever

the teacher they had last year. We struggled through 1st grade with

and a teacher that may not have been the most appropriate. I did speak with

him about the middle of the year, and he was unbudgable, arguing that who are

any of us to say one teacher is better than the other. Trying to explain to

him that some teaching styles and structure of class would be more beneficial

for a hearing child, was fruitless...so I am not involved at all in their

placement, other than I did get him to agree NO trailers. Is the choice to

be involved and have your IEP team involved in the choice of teacher vary

between schools or do we have some rights here that he is ignoring? Thanks

for any help anyone can offer....

Most schools are that way here too . BUT, the principle at Jake's school

listens to the HI teacher in most cases and tries to accommodate what will

work best for Jake. Unfortunately the teacher that would probably be best

for Jake when he repeats Kindergarten has the teacher assistant from

hell........so we are hoping the asst. moves to another teacher since she

seems to have something against deaf kids from the reports I get.

At Josh's school, you write a letter to the principle and get the LEA or

SPED director to write how they think the child needs to be taught and give

the traits of the teacher that you want.....it worked for our friend that has

a deaf child at that school.

Sounds like you have a principle like Josh....called the " Dictator "

Our itinerate teacher of the deaf (Area Education Agency staff) would NOT

stick her neck out far enough to recommend a teacher (even tho, if she would

let her guard down long enough would agree that some teachers are better

than others for particular children. That doesn't mean they are better

teachers; just better for different children. She even told the classroom

teacher " I won't go there " when asked if she would help recommend. ) for

either of our 2 deaf daughters. But, luckily, the classroom teacher helped

me out there, and the principal was very open to our recommendations. Now,

time will tell if we actually get them. Could you get your classroom

teacher to back you in your recommendations??

This may vary due to state SPED law, however in MA, you are not allowed to

choose a teacher or any other service provider unless the entire TEAM

agrees. Often, the school will not allow it at all.

Oh man, I am feelng SO much better today...so much better. So here is

how my week has been. Altogether a very very good week.

1. I feel better! The incision barely hurts as long as I don't do any

cartwheels. The pain in my side is nearly gone. The exhaustion is

completely gone! I have gone from feeling horrible Monday to feeling

like I could climb mountains today.

2. I have been to the gym every day this week except yesterday, and only

because we went to Seattle straight away after school. We did walk in

Seattle, though.

3. Today I was able to do a full hour of exercise. I was careful and

didn't overdo it, nor work through any pain. I just have so much more

stamina now than just a week ago! A week ago I was too tired to work out

because I'd taken an afternoon trip to the store!

4. First week back at work went relatively okay. Monday I was too tired

so I stayed home Tuesday. I've been back since then, though.

5. Someone stopped me on the street because they recognized my pictures

from Curves. They put up my before and after pictures on their bulletin

board. It was kinda cool!

6. I have the best husband ever. He wanted to call my principal and ask

her if I could park closer to my room. I don't need to, but it was a

sweet thought...and you KNOW how much he hates to talk on the phone, so

a REALLY sweet thought.

7. I feel SO much better!!!!!!!!

8. We went to see The Producers last night. Okay, that play should come

with a Surgeon's General Warning! No one who has had surgery within the

last three weeks is allowed, no one who is over 7 months pregnant, and

no one with incontinence issues. It was SO funny that literally it hurt

like a son of a gun to laugh. I was holding my side where it hurts just

to keep from doubling over in pain. I seriously had to take a pain

pill...it was THAT FUNNY. I can't wait to see it again this summer in LA

if it's still playing.

9. Saw the doc on Wednesday about the pain in my side. He said it was

just internal sutures pulling on the rectus abdominus and that I'm

healing very nicely.

10. My students were VERY happy to see me back this week.
