<<Do your doctors recommend it or is it just an option that is up to everyone??

Appreciate your help with this!>>

My doc recommended that I take them before being preg because I am extremely

anemic. My son is 18 months old now and I am still taking my prenatals. My

ob/gyn thinks that they are a great multi-vitamin for anyone to take just to

take.

Hello, Rita. All I know is that I have always been

told that taking a prenatal vitamin is a must.

However, I have recently met a few women who say that

they made them so sick that they never took them past

the first month.

Personally, I took Folic Acid for 3 months prior to

conceiving and then once I conceived I took Folic Acid

AND the prenatal vitamins. Every one of the last 4

doctors I have had during this pregnancy (I move

around a lot!) all recommended that I take them. Hope

this helps.

Don't " quote " me on this, but it has been my experience that w/ any

pregnancy (mullerian anomaly or not), that it is a good idea to take the

vitamins, because of the folic acid. Keep going girl!

I know of a lot of women who do take prenatals during their TTC time. I

sometimes have, but mostly I have limited my vitamins to B-complex and lots

of folic acid. I am still taking just that at 7w2d of pregnancy and

positively dreading having to take prenatals . . . they do tend to bind one

up. :-(

At least make sure that you are getting folic acid, Rita. Good luck.

Hi Rita,

I may be a little biased on this, as I work in the alternative health care

field, but I strongly beleive in the importance of vitamin supplements,

whether pregnant or not. Unless a person is eating fresh, organic,

unprocessed food for 90% of their daily diet, our packaged, processed,

heated food is stripped of many essential vitamins and minerals needed for

growth, development, and every day health. Unfortunatly, medical doctors

are not trained in the importance of nutrition in medical school, and

therefore their approach to this issue is different. As I say, maybe I am

biased, but I have had great personal results in my life over the past 5

years from a switch to a healthy diet and vitamin supplements.

Hello, Rita. Well, right when I went off the BCP, I went to the doctor for a

check up and asked for a prescription for prenatal vitamins. He [i don't seem

him anymore, by the way] thought it was weird that I would need a prescription

for them but wrote it anyway. I had never seen any prenatals OTC and lots of

info that I have read highly recommends getting enough folic acid to prevent

neural tube birth defects and that taking them for about 3 months prior to

conception is an ideal. Well, I got 'generic' prenatal vitamins and they are

Ultra NatalCare by Ethex and it's really boosted up in its vitamin and mineral

content. I took them starting in December and got pregnant in March [lucky for

me to have the timing work out so well]. But I didn't know anything about

uterine 'abnormalities' or anything. I didn't know that I had a BU until I was 6

wks pregnant. I still don't know a lot about it other than my baby had planted

himself on the left side [don't know which one is bigger]. Before my doctor just

said that women of child-bearing age should be taking at least a multi-vitamin

daily. Does this help? Sorry I kind of got 'winded'!

Well, I know that I've been ignorantly blessed. I got pregnant practically right

away and my prenatal vitamins don't make me sick or constipated. I had one day

where I was a little 'backed up' but, if anything, I am more likely to have

diarrhea [sorry, too much info!]. I have to remind myself of the good little

things that I have going for me. :)

Hi ,

I've always been suspicious about how much knowledge your average

OB/GYN actually has about nutrition and the RDA for various

vitamins/minerals etc. - but here is what mine told me - and I

actually asked her about this today at my 16 wk checkup. Her

preference is that you rely on your diet to get the MAJORITY of

nutrients you and the baby require. Given that today's standard food

is depleted, processed etc., some nutrients such as folic acid are

difficult to get in adequate amounts, hence the prenatals

as " insurance " . However, she cautioned me that some nutrients, such

as vitamin A (and some derivatives) can actually be toxic in high

doses and not to " overdo " the multivitamins due to a " more is better "

mentality. Plus, the nutrients in food are in their most

absorbable, " bio-available " form, which isn't always true of

vitamins, depending on how you take them. She told me that if I eat a

balanced diet with a focus on fresh fruits/veggies, get enough

calcium and protein, then any quality OTC prenatal should be fine, or

even a regular multi-vitamin, with an extra 1 mg of folic acid taken

separately should be okay.

As a side line, I was very glad to hear that you are taking it easy

and that your husband is at your service - as it should be :)

I hope you have an uneventful week just resting up and things calm

down for you. Hang in there and try not to worry. I'll be thinking

of you.
