Yep, I'm a member. And, I find it really difficult to remember to do the things you mentioned! Like the other night, for example: I went out to a restaurant with the Bible study ladies from church. I ordered an appetizer of coconut shrimp (which I split with my sister), then a burger & fries. And, without even thinking about it, I ate the whole burger & most of the fries. I was pretty full after that (probably around 7 or 8) and then my sister really wanted to order dessert but didn't want to eat it alone... so she suggested we split it. I told her I was really full, but then she said she was ordering the "deep fried Wunderbar" (it's got peanut-butter & chocolate... and if you know me, you KNOW I cannot resist that combo!!!). So, of course, I caved, and I was around a 10 after that!! Ick. I felt horrible. And yet, it wasn't until AFTER I'd gotten home that I recalled the IE way to do things... put half in a to-go box right away so you're not tempted to eat the WHOLE meal. Ugh.

Oh well. Observe & correct. Next time I'll remember! ;o)

(and the meal was pretty darn good, nevertheless!)

the clean plate club

Are you a member of the clean plate club? This is something that I was taught, eat what is on my plate. I have learned to deal with that and IE. I learned by watching my naturally thin IE mother. As long as I have known her I have never seen her use a regular size dinner plate. My mother uses small plates or bowls and fills her plates with a bit of everything on the table. I too began using smaller dishes. At buffets I usually use the salad plates for the main course. In regular restaurants I don’t worry as I always ask for a doggy tray, and take food home for later. Not only do I escape the guilt of wasting food but my psyche feels it is getting a ‘full’ plate of food to eat. I do still occasionally leave food on my plate, which my dog, Pal, is thankful for.

I just thought I would share my ‘experiences’.

I'm a PAST member of the clean plate club! I think I've mentioned this before, but the turning point for IE starting to work for me was when I realized that I didn't need to pile my plate with food because I could always go back for more later if it wasn't enough. I know that sounds deceptively OBVIOUS, but for a compulsive overeater/binger/dieter, it was NOT obvious! I started out cutting my regular portions in half, and was shocked to find I was STILL too full! So then I cut THAT portion in half too. I'm now taking about a quarter of the amount of food I used to eat. I had sort of gotten used to eating this way, and it was brought home to me how drastically my portions have changed when my step mom came over one day and saw me making some pasta for lunch. She was like "WOW! That's not much food!" and I was only planning on eating HALF of what I'd prepared and saving the other half for the next day! LOL After much experimenting with portion sizes and hunger/satiety cues, I've discovered that as a general rule of thumb I can only eat about a cup and a half of food in a sitting. I eat a lot of little meals throughout the day, and rarely finish meals when I go out to eat now. Here's an example. Pre-IE, going to 's, I would order a Big bacon classic burger with a biggie size fry and a biggie size diet coke. Now I order just a sandwich OR a chili OR a baked potato. I've discovered I actually do NOT like 's fries cause they are too dry (but I do like A & W's) so I never order them, and drinking a bottled water with my meal is much more satisfying than a huge soda and makes me feel much less gassy and bloated. If I'm still hungry, I might eat a couple of Micah's leftover fries, but that very rarely happens.

I used to be a member of the clean plate club but no more. I grew up where it

was a mortal sin to leave food on your plate. I had one sister that was a closet

bulimic and another sister that was always dieting.

As a teenager my normal weight stayed right around 180 lbs (I'm 5'9 " tall) and

I was very active. I really never gave much thought to my size til I got into

high school and got labeled. You know the names I mean. I managed to lose down

to around 140 lbs but then got pregnant with my son and gained 82 lbs. Then

after he was born I continued to gain until I reached my all time high of

249-1/2 lbs. My son came home from school crying cause a kid told him he had an

elephant for a mother. I swore I'd never let my size embarrass him again. I went

on a very strict, unhealthy diet and lost 105 lbs in 13 months. I went from a

size 22 down to a size 10. And I kept it off and even some more came off until I

remarried in 1996. In the first 7 years of my marriage I gained 68 lbs. Then I

went on another strict diet and over a 2 year period I lost 47 lbs. But then in

the past 13 months I've regained the 47 lbs plus added another 11 lbs for good

measure. But this time I intend to lose the weight by listening to my body and

only eating when I'm truly hungry and then stopping as soon as I'm satisfied.

And no foods are off limits as long as I like them and aren't allergic to them.

Life is just too short to do without foods you love. It's a matter of being

mindful of what you're eating and only eat as much as your body needs. I'll

probably never be as small as I was even 13 months ago but even if I only manage

to get 20-30 lbs off I'll feel I'm at a healthier place. But it's not going to

be because of another strict diet.

Huh, this just reminds me of how I use to eat when I was bingeing at buffets. You know how they have those little itty bitty plates or cup-bowls meant for one piece of dessert? I would go and get a dinner plate for my desserts. I would always get strange looks.Vicki wrote: Are you a member of the clean plate club?
