Guest guest
Kathy, Thanks for the info. Rohan gets a lot of cheese and a bit from cream (I think it has only a little compared to milk) and some salmon and mackerel and broccoli etc. I would really appreciate the list that you have stored. We too don't have a dietician and our paed. prescribed the 400mg Ca. I mentioned the Freeman book saying something like 600mg, but she said 400 was sufficient. I was not v.happy with it, and hence my question. Saro myketokid@... wrote: > Saro, > is 6 and I give him 600mg of calcium (300mg mag). Guest guest
I would keep the mag amount almost equal to the calcium amount. Its needed for absorption (whats the point of pooping out the calcium?) and for malnourished diets and good for seizures and consitpation.....should I go on?? Jess gets something like 800 mg and 900 calcium per day
Guest guest
, Thanks for the Calcium info. Just at the moment I'm scared of adding or taking away anything. It looks like Rohan's calcium is far too low, even though he eats a lot of cheese, some salmon, broccloi etc. I'd been giving him 400mg of Magnesium with the 400mg Cal, on the advice of the list. So perhaps I should leave the Mg alone and at least double the calcium for a start, sometime in the near future. How much magesium do you give Jess? BTW I'd like v.much the website for estimating the amts. of minerals etc, if you can get hold of it again. Thanks Saro ..coole@... wrote: > sanaljay wrote: > > > We too don't have a dietician and our paed. prescribed > > the 400mg Ca. Guest guest
HI all, I have read all you calcium intake emails, and I have a question. My son is 3 and I give him Oscal 500...1/2 tablet per day. From what I can tell, he is only getting 250mg per day. I also give him the Bugs Bunny Vitamin...that label reads 100mg. So, I think he is only getting 350 mg per day. He has had his blood checked, and calcium is included, every 6 weeks and all has been fine. From what I read, is quite low on his calcium intake....how would I know if more is needed? , Mom to 3.0 Angelman Syndrome Keto Kid since 11/00, seizure/med free Re: Re: Calcium > I would keep the mag amount almost equal to the calcium amount. Thats the potential problem with the diet, the body sucking the calcium out of the bones, and then you have a risk of osteoporosis and you don't even know it until a kid starts falling and breaking bones. The risk is much greater if your child is not walking. Here is what I would suggest - take five days worth of menus of what he eats and send them to your dietican, ask her to see how much calcium he is getting on average from his food. Then you can what he is getting from supplements and look at the requirements for his age to see how he is doing. , 's mom
Guest guest
, None of the mineral requirements - lists I've seen give very high values for Magnesium. I wonder, whether one could not overdose? What did your neuro/ paed say? Saro m.coole@... wrote: > I would keep the mag amount almost equal to the calcium amount. Guest guest
, One thing I have read (very recently) is that calcium is gonna circulate in the blood, basically at the same level, regardless of the intake. If a deficiency happens, it will be in the bones (not the blood). In other words, bloodwork is not the true test of calcium. Only a bone test or bone scan can tell you if there is a deficiency. We've always had a calcium test in with all of 's bloodwork - and it has always come back fine. But, with reading this, I'm gonna ask for a bone scan this summer ( 1 1/2 years on the diet for ). Calcium is the number one worry I have. Guest guest
Kathy YOu might have trouble getting a bone scan without any symptoms of problems. Ask for a 24 hr urine first, it will tell you how much calcium he is peeing out and if tis high, it will give you ammo to ask for bone scan myketokid@... wrote: > , > One thing I have read (very recently) is that calcium is gonna circulate > in the blood, basically at the same level, regardless of the intake. Guest guest
I had did a lot of vitamin mineral reasearch with Barb prior to my virus, lost a lot of stuff, but I will check and see what I still have on magnesium. I think I do have stuff on signs of overdose and that (I will post later) but basically you know you got too much when you get diahrea. Do some websearching you will find interesting stuff on calcium and mag and absorption. Naturopath knows what she is getting and she is fine with it, new recommndations are coming to 1:1 ratio but our dietican never even heard of recommended 2:1 ratio. Neuro and ped knows what I am doing (before I told ped, he said give her more magnesium, good for seizrues, calcium abosrption, maknourished diet, kidney stones, I said I know, I know....) but I find most conventional drs don't know a whole lot about it. I would check periodically blood mag levels however, like when you do keto blood work every six months or so, I wouldn't want to see them go high, but from what I have seen with Jess even with supplmenting she still runs low in blood levels - but blood levels of mag are not real accurate measures. Only time I saw her mag go high was this last bloodwork where pottasum was low due to diutetic, I believe answer there is making sure I get her pottasium levels back up. Gotta go, Sparks sports day, will send the other stuff later sanaljay wrote: > , > None of the mineral requirements - lists I've seen give > very high values for Magnesium. Yup, you throw out first one in morning, then collect the rest for all day and the first one the next morning. Have to keep refirgerated as you are doing it. And if you miss any, you gotta start over. But it gives an accurate picture of what is going out in urine, a spot check can be misleading high or low. > > My docs are pretty easy on testing.
