Vegetarian LID (was Re: My Surgery Went Great!!!)

Sounds like you are having a pretty good time of it (or making the

best, which is even better).

I'm a vegetarian also (actually, I eat seafood, but that is not

relevent in a LID). I avoided soy carefully, probably too carefully.

The LID goal is to restrict iodine intake, not to eliminate it. I

stayed away from prepared food, such as stuff with a small amount

of soy oil - even though I guessed it had little iodine. The big

problem is that no one has done the work to get iodine quantities

for most common food.

Most LIDs are 2 weeks (apparently only the 2nd week counts, and the

first is for practice). You'll get a chance to have those veggies

all the time - non-vegetarians tend to eat a lot of meat/poultry.

One really annoying thing you will discover is that *everything*

in a health/veggie store is not allowed! Every prepared product

uses sea salt as a luxury, an LID no-no. I spent hours in a huge

" Whole Foods " and came out without anything!

Chances are, you'll end up with a veggies/starch (and no protein

unless you're willing to chance poorly labelled wheat gluten and

such; if you do eggs, egg whites or substitutes work) diet. Be

prepared to be tired, moody, and nauseous - so anything ready in

advance (hypo makes you appreciate freezers and microwaves) will

save a lot of aggravation. Try to look at the food annoyance as a

*good* way to vent at time the doctors make you their protocol

puppets!

If anyone gets a veggie diet together - we should share it. The

Thyca site cookbook has some good recipes.

Best of luck and happy holidays
