A new vital sign for doctors: Pain

For decades, doctors have checked the same four vital signs of patients:

Temperature, blood presure, respiratory pressure and heart rate.

Starting tomorrow, most will be checking for a fifth -- PAIN.

........having pain above the level of four (4) begins to interfere with

....recuperation.   ...The extent of a patient's pain will also be

measured both before and after medication is given tomeasure how well

that pain has been aileviated.   Opiates such as morphine can be given in

large doses safely, Ms. Ulner said, and doctors and patients must be

educated of that fact.     ...Hospital stays are often short, but the

pain oftten remains.  The new standards ask doctors to adequately prepare

patients to handle their own pain at home.  When they go home it should

be mangaged just as it was at the hospital.

The above is an edited version of the article re JCAHO and was writen by

Tim Hyland, Staff Writer for the Capital.

Hugs and a pain free minute,
